Default Import Tax

Hello Hello,
I'd been advised when ordering from the US to ask for items to be sent as a "gift" and that a well-known US company would happily do so. So i emailed them waiting to send £600 only to be told they cannot do this as they are a business . They've said though they could devalue the items, i take it this means i WILL get taxed but only a % of the value inside......

Anyone had any large value items imported and had the dreaded import tax?

Best bet is value at 'cost price' and pay a bit, if you take the p you run a big risk of getting clobbered

Any idea what percentage import tax is? Is it one of these things where the items will be held and a letter sent to my house awaiting payment?.

They wont send as a gift but they should be able to send as SAMPLES and declare the value as shipping price only

I think you get charged VAT plus company's like parcel force charge for collecting the tax.
Putting Gift when sent from a company is a bad idea. You stand a chance of getting charged less this end if its de-valued but they can research value and clobber you.
Remember its the receiver (you) who is responsible for what the sender puts on the customs declaration. If this information is false you not only stand to lose the goods by may face criminal charges.
Best bet is de-value but don't take the p!ss.

You're looking at around £100-£150 possibly more, I import stuff all the time from the US. The "gift" decleration thing won't work.

On a £600 bike frame I paid £120. That was with just 4% duty. The rest is mostly VAT

I got pistons, rods, headstuds, and bearings from the US and I think I got charged £48 which was early last year. I'm pretty sure They may have devalued them but I'm not sure?

non what so ever , most businesses have accounts with shipping companys for revenue to be collected so it may make it stand out from the masses of parcels at the bonded warehouse more.

Shame you don`t know someone over there to post it to, and then they send it as a gift with the receipt being sent separately.

I'm not sure I would be asking or explaining how to defraud customs and excise on a public forum!

These guys carry more weight than MI5!! Lol

Or know someone who lives in an EU country that has lower taxes as we don't pay duty on items sent to the uk from EU countrys.

I bet the import taxes in Romania are far cheaper than here but it worth considering if there postal service is corrupt and you risk having your good being stolen. If using countys like this or Italy which is a nightmare to use UPS or FEDEX instead of the national postal service.
