Default Turbo Timer....

Good afternoon all,

Got a turbo timer fitted over the weekend, ot to grips with it and it was working fine on the saturday... fired up the car sunday (timer lit up etc) and when I pulled into the petrol station and knocked it off... the thing didnt keep the engine running... no idea why, dont think I have changed anything... anyone know of a common fault?

It is apexi, with a HKS loom... as I say, was fine for a day!

Maybe the engine wasn't hot enough to warrant it staying on??

and for once i'm not casting my opinion on turbo timers

Hmmm... fuses... good point.. just seems odd that it is still lit up etc...

Anyway, not rating the timer?... Is there something I am missing! Was getting fed up with waiting for the car to spool down everytime I wanted a bottle of Coke from the shop etc!...

drive slowly off boost for the last mile, easy. also saves waiting in the car with the engine running and creating possible insurance issues due to having a turbo timer.

Scoob Turbos are water cooled and because of the natural convection of water, your turbo will continue to be cooled after switch off.
Driving the last mile or two of a journey off boost will do a much better job of cooling than a TT every could any way

i was told a few years back by alan jefferies that turbo timers are useless unless doing track days etc...
how many people drive like mad right up to their front door/petrol station etc??? all it takes is 10-20 seconds of normal driving to cool it down enough plus he told me about a car that was on the rollers and the throttle jammed fully open and they couldnt cshut the car off as the timer kicked in.big waste of money and easy way to void your insurance as well as the car is running whilst you are not in the vehicle.

Shouldn`t affect insurance at all cos as soon as you drop the handbrake, the engine cuts out Well, it does on mine anyway.

Ahh good point Steve, also I take my steering wheel with me so, if you can get in it, and drive it far enough away that I'm not going to be pounding up the same street in my trainers, without the wheel and with the h-break on... frankly, you have earnt it!

I understand why people have turbo timers but I've always favoured just taking my time before parking up.

The reason why insurance companies don't like turbo timers s on some cars, you have to fudge around and remove the immobiliser transponder from the key and secure it near the ignition barrel otherwise the second you take the key out the immobiliser steps in making the timer useless.

I'm sure my mate had his installed like that on his RX7, could have been anything though, he's had about 15 cars in the few years I've known him!

I have a timer on my Scoob, sometimes it works fine, sometimes, like you say, it just doesnt keep the engine running..

Sometimes though, it doesn't light up/buttons don't work, but when you switch the ignition off, it still times as it should.. However on saturday I parked it up at my Uncles and jumped in his car to go to the football and it didn't light up but carried on running as it does sometimes, so I just left it and set off thinking it will stop in a minute.. It didnt.. Had to go back and unplug the timer under the dash.. Removing this weekend..

I have a HKS type 1 timer on mine & have never had a problem with it & can not see why I would. The transponder chip is only needed to start the car not to keep it running. Anyone who wants to steal it would have to get past the steering lock mechanisum before attempting to drive it with the handbrake on! It can be wired into a door switch circuit so it cuts off if any door is oppened but can easily be shut down with one press of a button.

Removoing your immobiliser chip from your key is like removing your immobiliser, never a good idea.

Marcevs, if you were repying to my post above, the "Still appropriate for a classic turbo" was refering to the info regarding the MY02 WRX NOT turbo timers

Had a turbo timer in my car from when it was imported, never used it though, don't think it's even connected properly which bugs me a bit. Does anyone really drive on boost that much to warrant it?
