Default Engine update and STI 7 Piston Strength?

Just following up from the car i bought from Dooda on here, the car with the engine which was just put back together when issues were found whilst it was in for headgasket replacment.

Firsty Dooda was true to his word and refunded me the agreed amount for which i thank him for.

...........anyway i started with the removal/strip of the PPG gearbox which was the fault i knew the car had before i bought it and as was expected it had totally destroyed 5th gear. Im no transmission specialist but everything else looked fine, the box is due for inspection next week by a freinds Dad who is a transmission specialist so i guess i will find out for sure.

I also started to strip the engine this week to see the extent of the damage that Rich from FBtuning openly told me about. Now just to back up what Rich found i have taken a few photos......The scores in the bores could be felt with boxing gloves on!

Ive only removed one of the Wiseco pistons so far but the one i removed has 2 cracks, and ive no doubt that the other three will follow suit! There was talk.....(can i call these people doubters?).....in the other thread of me repairing the gearbox and running the engine as it is, well i think the photos prove this engine was a ticking time bomb and the deciscion to strip it and not use it was the right one.

The crack in this photo is the smaller of the 2.

Now i have a few options regarding the engine.....I managed to buy back the engine from my STI Bug which i broke for parts on here recently(cheers John)....and my first idea was to use the bug's bottom end and bolt on the sti3 heads which would give me time to get the CBD down the machine shop for a rebore(if not beyond it) and build it back up with the exisiting crank, manley rods but new bearings and forged pistons for a fresh new engine.

The other option is to refresh the bug block with new bearings but use the manley rods from the CDB coupled with the bugs forged pistons with a hone and new rings.

This option is based on the newage sti engine will take well over 400bhp, mine was running a shade over that but how strong are the sti bugs forged pistons? will they take much abuse?.....because this will be more than a road car.

Jay

P.S.........Just to add, the general census is that the way to identify a CDB is by the cross hatchings above the the bottom pulley, well thats not entirely correct, this CBD has no cross hatchings but is 100% a CBD with under piston squirters. The markings it does have tho are the lines on the starter motor housing and also the cross hatchings on the oil modine housing...

Bit of a pig mate but those will polish out (eventually )
But your last bit is how you should look for a CDB, and the gearbox, id be impressed if the 5th gear splinters have done no damage to the rest of the PPG gearset, normally when that goes it kills the lot

Just hope it all comes right for you

It's the easiest way to identify the vast majority of them.
A few version 2 cars had the blocks you mention I believe which are CDB but have no cross hatching, I have one at our place

Cheers Tony.....Dooda mentioned apart from obviously not being able to engage 5th gear, the box had also lost 2nd and reverse but we had it driving in 2nd and reverse before the box was removed so hopefully its not that bad.....hopefully!

Martyn....My option using the Manley rods with the V7 pistons, and option worth considering in you opinion? The car will only be pushed as much as the MD321T will let it with the occassional track use.

You didn't waste much time getting that apart! Looking at the cracked piston and the state of the bores it's a good job you didn't just stick a gearbox in and run it like people were suggesting

I'm using a standard 2005 sti 2 litre short motor in mine with ported and polished sti 3 cylinder heads and mine is making 420bhp at the moment at 1.6 bar. It could probably do more at higher boost but it was mapped with a walboro fuel pump that was failing and leaning it out at the top end so we stopped there and haven't tried for more since I replaced the pump. Your old short motor should do the job perfectly for what you want

I'm no gearbox expert but I'd expect more damage than 5th there

Good luck with the rebuild

STD. Pistons are fine for a road car with the odd trackday, not fine for a track monster, IMHO.
