Default Buying a 115k Hawkeye STi, what do I need to know?

Hi folks. Well it appears I have now found the perfect car to move onto from my classic wagon. It's higher miles than I wanted, but is a great price as a result.

I've heard stories about the 2.5 engines, and just wanted to find out if there's anything I need to know and/or should do when I get it?

I believe it will soon want a cambelt change at 115k? The one I am going to buy has full Subaru service history. Is it worth keeping this up??

Surely it should have had a cambelt done at 100k - every 50?

Mine just had its 50k and had it done. WRX though, don't know if cambelt changes are different.

Cambelt should have been done at 100k (50k intervals) so check the history and call the relevant dealer

Paying £5.5k from a garage, hence me going for it, despite the mileage! Really hope I won't have any issues with it. Fingers well and truly crossed!

It's a Spec D, also. I'm hoping it will have had a rebuild at some point and be on half that really, but I won't be upset if not

Not getting it til later this month, but a deposit has been placed.

When i bought my impreza, i checked the stamps and called the dealers up to confirm it. Sad i know but i knew how easy it is to create a FSSH. If it has been done they will have it on their computers, might be worth doing if your worried about it.

For 5.5K looks like a nice motor although slightly high mileage but hence why it is 5.5k, lol

If it drives will then go for it mate

If it all checks out and it drives well go for it, any car can have issues.

High miles, low price, just make sure you have some spare cash tucked away for a rainy day.

Things to bare in mind is the suspension and well as the engine and gearbox. give it a thorough test drive and make sure it feels tight, no knocks or clonks, smoke nasty mechanical noises. Check the clutch is good, try pulling away on third, if it slips then use this as bargaining. if it is on its original clutch then chances are the miles are motorway miles but it (clutch) might well be on its last legs. Most important make sure you see it started from cold - look and listen for noise and smoke on start up.

Most important is how the car has been used and ideally not abused. If a lot fo those miles are motorway miles then all good, if it was on a track every other weekend then run, run for the hills. See if you can contact the last owner to verify its miles, service history and usage. They might be on here.

You pays your money and you takes you chances, does it come with a warranty? and if so check the warranty is worth more than the paper it is written on.

Even if it all checks out your buying a high miles high performance car have you saved some cash for things to go wrong as they will do with any car with car covering that distance, even waer and tear items?

TBH I thinks it's worth it at that price, if it does go pop you can re-build better and stronger and go for it again.

Good Luck

Look on the bright side if it does go pop you'll have 3k in the gearbox and brakes, not including anything else, so at worst you'll break even after a bit of fun.

Yes. I have owned numerous performance cars and am no stranger to this sort of thing. I just haven't owned one of these. I am currently driving a classic on 138k! Still going strong.

If there's no evidence of it in its history, I'll be looking at a full suspension refresh over the coming months. this car is going to need to be ready for a 3000 mile European road trip at the end of summer

Its worth buying mate, as said its worth it in parts if it goes wrong for you (fingers crossed it wont).

Worse case scenario would be the engine or box shatting itself, so you would be looking at £1800 for a complete low mileage engine transplant inc labour. Gearbox rebuild anything up to £1000.

Just got the reg back from the guy, is it worth posting? First registered in April 06 so should be the cheaper tax, I believe?

Think the tax will be £460 or whatever it is - the high one anyway. March 06 is the cut off point.

IF you have the spare money to pay for repairs then I don't think this would be a bad buy at all.

If all the history checks out and you have spare money for a big bill then go for it. Kinda tempted myself

Why have they called it a 2.0 WRX? Certainly looks like a Spec D.

If sold as Proven then well worth the money IMO. Headgaskets go at 30-40,000 miles, so in that sense low mileage is not necessarily an advantage. Judge it on condition not mileage.

Don't forget there is a very small niche market for this type of car, so don't be afraid to haggle a bit. How long has it been on their books?

Is there any reason you are buying a 115k miler instead of a more expensive one with say 40k on the clock?

I think he is passed the haggling stage as he has already put a deposit down on it.
