Default hawkeye key reprograming

hi folks, just purchased a hawkeye wrx and its only got one key, as you know subaru charge a small fortune for a replacement. i was going to buy a second hand key and have it reprogramed, but a locksmith offering his reprogroming services has said that keys cant be reprogramed to another vehicle. just wondered if this is true or not before buying a second hand key.

They can be, just not by his equipment.
He just writes to the chip in keys, but on later Impreza's, like yours, the keys need to be accepted by the car. A subaru only job, but will still save some money buying a second hand key.

I think but can't remember off the top of my head you can reprogramme a key yourself if you have the keypad built into your car.

Have a look in the key manual that comes with the paperwork.

Thats for the alarm part, that can be done. But he is saying he doesn't have a spare key, to physically start the car. That has to be programmed to the immobiliser.

Just had a quick look and it says you can reprogramme the fob. Its on page 14 on the imobiliser booklet. So in theory it should be able to sort out the new key so that it works with the car. Just read it yourself and see if it is what you are after because like I said I literally just had a quick look.

you wilk still need subaru to program the key into the immobiliser. the fob programming for remote opening is done on the keypad.

cheers lads i thought they could be done but just wanted to double check. i have not got the number for the keypad, but have just purchased a key for thirty quid off ebay. so it will be a trip to the main dealer for reprograming and to get the code for the keypad.and i should have saved myself quite abit of money....

Am I missing something here?

Surely a second hand key will have been cut for a car with different locks fitted, you may be able to program it to operate your cars imobiliser, but it won't be able to start the car as it will not operate the ignition barrel.

i will have to get a new blade cut off my original key, hopefully they are removable and if not i will get a blank key cut, cut the old key off with a hacksaw and use it as a key and key fob. its only a spare and a cant bring myself to give subaru 250 pound for a key.[i assume they are removable as plenty of people sell the blades] iwill let you know how i get on...
