not legal but you can get undersized ones on the net
www.createmyplates.com for example
you need to buy a "show plate"

in the builder part you can specify the size.
but be prepared that if you fit the police will possibly bother you and make you change it and it will be an mot fail as its illegal.

I'd persoanlly go for a 3/4 size, with no border and a large plain font, in 5 or so years of driving with that size I have never been pulled as unless you compare it like for like to a stardard size it does not look too small, again I'm not a mad driver though and no mega loud exhaust so do not give them any excuse to pull.

and on my hatch

Nope they are illegal, better to not have one at all than to have a small one, so the old bill told me x

If you speak to Scott at coolplates he does some awesome ones that you can create on his website.

It's very subtle but on mine i have the subaru stars in the background and a border that matches the colour of the car. Been stopped numerous times and its never been questioned by the police.

I know its not an answer to your question but it might point you in another direction.

This is what I did

The font is correct, the size and spacing are correct and the background is reflective. It's also legally placed & the only thing missing is the BS mark but it should pass an MOT & it would have to take a really ar$ey copper to give you a fine for it...

Define legally placed? It's facing the sky, not the front?

if the numbers arnt the correct size and correct spacing then they are illegal.
i had a small one on mine, got pulled and the copper gave me a £60 on the spot fine.so i ordered a private plate with less letters so i could have the standered size letters but with the plate cut down so it was smaller.while my documents were at the dvla being swapped over for the new reg i got pulled again on the exact same road.i told the copper i had just been pulled a couple of weeks earlier and had sent my docs off to be swapped on to the new reg so i couldnt have another plate made till i got them back.so like a nice gent that he was,he slapped me with another £60 fine.he then said to me,well you should have just taken the small one off and drove around without one on because thats only a £30 fine.

I have a short number so just hacked the sides off so it matches the width of the Hawk as above. Simples.

Just needs to be on the front of the car & as vertical as reasonably practical - though I would say I was pushing that boundary a bit...

It's not BS approved either but its also a pre 2001 car.

At the end of the day, its easily recognisable and readable. What they're trying to stop is people changing letters/fonts etc and trying to make them harder to read (ie track/trace).

I like the idea of a private plate with the edges trimmed.

I always try and get standard size lettering but get the plate as small as possible.
