Default Best oil grade for High miles and slap??

Hi all

My UK MY99 Wagon is due an oil change soon and wanted some advice!!

It's got 123k miles on it at the mo on the origional engine and runs well apart from a little piston slap on start up in the morning.

This usually subsides after around 5 mins when the engine's warmed through.

So I know the usual grade of oil is 15w50 and I usually use Silkolene or alike but wanted to know if it's better to use a different viscosity to help with the piston slap and also due to the higher miles of the car?

All help appriciated!

Cheers.

Oil grade or viscosity has little to do with piston slap. It could be said that due to the pistons being lubricated via "splash" feed (oil flicked onto the bores from it's escape from the bearings) a thinner oil, certainly in winter, would allow this to occur quicker from a cold start.
It takes only a very small increase in piston/bore clearance to allow slap to be noticable. You could try a 10/50 at the next oil change but to be honest, I think you'll find little difference.
