Are you saying it has no history whatsoever? I would be very way of buying a car like this without any history.
ensure it is what it says it is - check the code against this http://www.subaru-impreza.org/forum/...ine-codes.html

He seems a genuine trader on the phone,3 and a half seems a good price??.
Anything to look/hear for when he starts it up etc?
Thanks
Can I tell by looking at it if it is a genuine type R?

Get the reference number from the V5 and then you can at least check the MOT history online which will show mileage history too

As abover really mate, Looks like a pretty standard example but very hard to tell from the pics, Not a bad price @3.5k but thats probablly relates to the lack of paperwork/history, See if he has the prevoius owners datails as above and see if you can get into contact with him/her, Also ask what it was traded in for/against.
I cant see a fog light and the clocks look to be reading in KM not miles, considering it has been in the country for 5 years I would have thought these issues would have been addressed.

A few things to check when you get there.
If possible start it from cold, open the bonnet and have a good listen, make sure there's no knocking or tapping.
Once warm pop the bonnet again for another good listen.
Watch the idle and see if it's idling properly and not waving around.Could indicate maf issues.
Pull the dipstick to see if the oil is still golden so you know if it's been changed recently.
Open the airbox and check if the filter is clean.Checking this and the oil should give you an idea with regard to if it's been serviced regularly.
Check underneath to see if it's been under sealed or wax oiled. If it hasn't but still looks clean then you can at least do it yourself if you buy it.
Check the centre diff works just by moving it forward while going in a straight line, listening for any noises.
Look at the brakes to see if they are clean or corroded as this will give you an indication of whether it's been stood for a while or not.
Go through the gears and check they engage smoothly without crunching and listen for noisy gear whine. Also put it in 5th at around 3000 rpm and floor it to check for any slipping of the clutch.
As there is no history with it I'd also check gearbox oil and check the header tank for clean water with antifreeze.
All those checks should give you a rough idea on how it's been treated overall.
If its completely standard then it could be a good thing because hopefully it won't have been badly modified without a remap ect.
There's other things to check, hopefully others can give more pointers to look for.
I'd personally fit a new maf just to be safe as well.
Let us know how it goes.
Danny.

Looks tidy but no paperwork and being sold by a garage makes me suspect it been witten off by an insurer and bought at an auction...either repaired cat D or stolen recovered.
HPi "should" cover that.
Mechnically though, you are in the dark. The engine could be a bitsa (made from bits of this and bits of that)
ECU maybe setup for Japanese fuel and some numbnut may have used 95ron fuel in it.
And because of the above, it maybe quiet and not knock now, but thats no guarantee it won't do it 5000miles later. Unfortunately nobody is going to able to tell that just by looking at it. I think the crux is how long its been in the UK, the longer its been here the more chance its been exposed to abuse.

Am I the only one that thinks thats a bit too cheap for a type r especially if the boddy is mint.

If you have a budget of £3.5K then a Type R probably isn't the best choice. Its an old V3 and its been in the country since 2006. So its first what 9 years or so were in Japan with no history of what happened to it when it was there.
I'd be absolutely stunned if the original auction sheet didn't say Grade 0
£3.5K would be excellent UK Turbo or a V4-V6 STI that needs selling. I also don't think Type Rs are really worth the extra money for 2 less doors.
In fact, if you have a budget of £3.5K and would be prepared to take an import than a Type RA is by far the best buy.

Right.....
It is a GC8D2DD =.WRX Type R STi 2 door / 278...I matched the plate with that site given above...Engine is standard everything...He/the trader who sells vans and took this off a very very fat lady in Stourport in px for a van,she is the ONLY owner since it landed in the UK 5 years ago...He has put on new track road ends, new water pump and new cam belt and serviced it,she put on a new fuel pump recently and that is the only paper work she has given him...The car inside is mint, the thingy that tells you % about the diff works fine, the auto and manual inter coolier spray work, needs a new tunage system, think she had some big *** system in as there is a funny looking capsual near the battery (see pic) Outside there is a little bit of rust over the one rear arch,it sounded ok when I started it up,I had my little girl with me so I didn't go out in it,and it was p1ssing it down lol ! I did notice a slight whisttle sound when I started it,but soon went..
Anyway I have offered £2500 for it pending me taking someone along who can check it over for me.

Any sort of rust on classic rear arches is major even if it looks like it isn't. Trust me I know, I lost a rear bumber because the arches were eaten away and I couldn't see it untill it was too late.
