Default could it be a gearbox problem? or clutch?

last week my classic impreza turbo started making a knocking noise in 1st gear quite loud sounds like its coming from the front of the car and underneath its does it faint in tick over but goes when clutch pedal is pressed down its faint at very beginning of 2nd gear but then fine after that like normal was wondering if its either clutch or clutch thrust bearing or hopefully not the gearbox just wondered if anyone else has had the same problem as must of happened before on older cars, its going to my mechanic mate on saturday but just trying to get an idea of what it could be to prepare me for what needs doing hope its not too expensive...
