Question

So, is anyone an authority on the fitting of aluminium bonnets to Mk1 non-STi WRX's?
Mine is a 97 five door, and has a steel bonnet. And it's definitely, definitely the original bonnet. But loads of people say it should have an aluminium bonnet.
So what's the truth? Were the 5 doors excluded from this, or was there a switch from aluminium to steel round about 1996/1997?
Anybody know?

UK models had steel bonnets its only the Japanese models which had ally ones and it looks like soem of the early ones didnt have ally either. I can lift my ally bonnet easily with one finger, easy to test it with a fridge magnet if it sticks, its steel. The JDM cars seem to vary in spec a lot more than teh UK cars. I guess it was that fact that they had no restrictions on sale so they could build a variety of specs. Where as until the import quotas were removed (in 1999 ??) then only a relatively small amount of UK spec cars were coming in.

cheers

I have 94 WRX Wagon and it has an ally bonnet on it. I think it's a bit up in the air as to which cars did and did not have them. kinda the same as to wether early non-sti WRX's had closed deck blocks or not.

Yep Mo your right not the 5 door models though . 22B TUK, P1's (or did they replace them with steel ??) and all the MY01's WRX onwards. There are a couple of ex-Prodrive 1.8GLs that have them as well I think .

I think the P1 has a steel bonnet. Not sure about this, but mine was replaced after a "small (ho ho)" incident, with an alluminium one, which seems to move a lot more at high speeds. I therefore assume that it originally had a steel bonnet. Or am I completely wrong?

Chris the P1 was based on an STi5 Type R which had an ally bonnet but they may have swapped them for the UK market like they did with the STi gold wheels for the 17" anthracites.

I tested my P1 bonnet with a magnet - deffo not steel, but I suppose that doesn't actually prove its ally either.....

Talking

Easy way to tell;

Steel = Magnetic

Alloy = Not Magnetic

Well every P1 I've seen has an ally bonnet, including the one parked outside now. It was also in the sales/marketting release too they came with them.

Which probably means its been badly fitted. I can see the intercooler intake moving quite a lot at high speed. Is this normal for ally bonnets?

Hi Chris - you can see the scoop moving about a bit as the ally bonnet flexes slightly on my UK spec MY02 WRX wagon.

At motorway speeds my bonnet scoop moves about quite a bit..

I think my bonnet is steel although I haven't had a chance to check yet.

I think they all move.. I know of four Scooby scoops that moved.

No movement on my P1 at motorway speeds at all...but that is 70mph, isn't it ... unlike the centre of the rear spoiler that vibrates like a vibrating thing

That's the way mine used to be before it was replaced. Seems to be quite a bit of variation. Suppose it won't cause any harm. It just looked a bit odd when the old one didn't do it.

BTW. Terry, Sorry for highjacking your thread.

Had the P1 off the clock on the way back from Catalunya. Didn't notice an vibration from the scoop or the spoiler.

Though thats not a catagorical statement, as attention was focused on the road. So the spoiler could probably have fallen off and gone unnoticed!

At 120+ my bonnet looks like it wants to come off... (on a track obviously..)
