When you consider how crude the concept of the internal combustion engine is, it's amazing that it's still in existance let alone new advances in actually trying to make the thing work better!
I miss having to clean and re-gap the contact breaker points then re-set the static ignition advance using a couple of bits of wire and a 12V bulb. Actually, I told a fib - I don't miss it at all!

Considering how things generally advance it's amazing to think the the internal combustion engine is following the same basic principle well over a century later. The same person who gave us the internal combustion engine as we know it also gave us our beloved flat four, Karl Benz a German engineer.

1896: Karl Benz invented the boxer engine, also known as the horizontally opposed engine, or the flat engine, in which the corresponding pistons reach top dead center at the same time, thus balancing each other in momentum
