Default DIY window tinting - whose done it?

Considering having a go at applying some mild window tinting to the rear door glass (maybe the rear screen?) Saw this firm on the net and wondered if anyone has had a go at it themselves?

http://www.window-tint.co.uk/

I would possibly consider the 35% tint on the door glass but would prefer milder, say 50%, on the rear screen.
Thoughts, comments or experiences would be appreciated.

While the kit seems pretty cheap, once you look at the time it takes, if you need another go its another kit. Terry tint near the lodge in south woodham charges around £25 per window.

When I was 19 me and a pal had a go at tinting the windows on my BX 16valve. It didn't go well to put it mildly..
Smashed a rear quarter glass trying to re-fit it and the two front windows had rips and holes all over within a week...lol.
For what it costs I'd have a pro do it, you'd also get a warranty against rips or peeling.

Also did a sunstrip, that now lives on the verge of the A14. It peeled itself off at 70mph, lol.

I did my old trusty Pajero and it's not too hard to do if you can get a mate to help....mind on a jacked up, mud covered old Pajero if it's a bit rough no one notices on a nice scooby.......would be a shame.

tried it once NEVER again what a pain in the a**e. not too bad but not perfect on glass that bends on one direction eg. side windows, but the rear glass bend both ways (like a bowl) and its a nightmare.

as said get a pro to do it

Blimey, those replies have rather put me off the DIY route! At least if I got it done, I would be able to specify a milder tint on the rear screen than the door glass?

The rear screen can be done in strips as opposed to one piece.

It'll have to be done on a while you wait basis as I never leave the car alone with anyone, except in an emergency!
What sort of money am I looking at for the two rear doors and rear screen?

Like matty I tried it many years ago and the result was terrible.
I peeled it off the next day and went to get some more rolls with a squeegee and a windscreen wiper to assist in getting the bubbles out.It turned out even worse.
A few weeks later motor world had some of the spray tint in cans,so I bought all they had.(6 cans)it turned out a bit better until I put the glass back in,rolled the windows down and it wasn't as dry as I thought.I'm sure you can guess what happened.

Its not too bad to do if you know what your doing! Check out tutorials and how the pro's do it on Youtube etc, specifically shrinking the tint, it will help you to do your rear window

ive done loads of cars in my younger days its fairly easy to do aslong as you have somewhere clean with plenty of space the rear window will need to be shaped on the outside before you fit it on the inside

I've done it before with great results. Take the Windows out of car, clean them immaculately, use fine water spray gun wet glass and film, apply film by sliding it on from one side and squeegie water out from between film and glass. Leave window to dry for hour near radiator before trimming. Trim with razor blade and seal edges with clear nail varnish. Refit Windows to car and don't wind down for week. Done loads like this with excellent results. Good luck.

if you want to do it yourself, you will need a large bath or something similar to do get the window in, its the only real way to do it yourself.

Taking windows out makes it very easy to do. Did it myself on my old car and only the rear screen looked crap because I didn't know how to heat shrink. The others were spot on if I may say so myself. Just a matter of doing it somewhere enclosed with help from a mate.

If it's your first time doing it, you'll need spare film as chances are you'll crease or mess something up. £25 a window is well worth it for a pro.

I've done a few, the secret is LOTS of spray on water/washing up liquid.

The more you put on, the easier to get the bubbles out and slide the film.

Most worry about adhesion, use too little spray and then the film has loads of bubbles and isn't aligned properly.

Get the window well wet and you can work for ages getting it perfect, then let it dry once you squeegee out the majority and voila.

Oh and keep the outside of the film wet with mix spray as well to prevent scratching the film with the squeegee.

Take the windows out! - that's got to be a PITA! I'd take the door cards and parcel shelf out in preperation - no problem.
I've applied plenty of decals and film trim when building R/C model aircraft, using the soapy water and squeegee method, in the past, so I might find a bit and have a go on some glass as practice before I make a decision either way!

No mate get a pro to do it. More hassle than its worth. I tried a rear window before and what a disaster due to the concave shape. Side windows are not too bad to do tho

Hardest part is the rear window. I wonder how many of those who tried it actually used heat shrinking to make the tint fit the window though? Without doing that it'll never fit the rear's concaved shape.

Ordered some precut tints myself from America off ebay £20 including economy delivery, thought I'd give it a shot.

I done it before on a Punto, but only the rear side windows, that I removed. I think with the door open, and pillarless doors, it'll be a breeze on an Impreza.
I did a very good job, even if I say so myself. As mentioned, use plenty of water, more than you think is enough. The rear screen, I wouldn't attempt because its so hard to get to.

Having not thought about it much before it hadn't occured to me how many cars there actually are about with some form of tinting! Not just 18 yr olds in Corsas, but all sorts!
If I do decide to do it, I think I'll give that Terry guy a call as I want a lighter tint on the rear screen than the door glass. No time this week, so I'll aim for sometime next week. Will post up how things go.
