Have a cuppa, then they fall off!!
If this doesn't work try heating with a blow torch then hammering a smaller size socket on the nut.

Will the nut splitter definitely work??
I've got two nuts on either side of the downpipe which are completely rounded..
Will Halfords sell the correct nuts to replace it?

It's nasty, no kidding. We've had some horrendous ones in there when we've had better things to do!
You need heat and lots of it, the studs are frequently damaged. I'd say most home mechanics could struggle with it unless they are better equipped than most.
Best of luck my friend..

Should do if you can get on and yes they should sell them. Got to be worth a try before you try a garage

Ah now i've learnt alot about these nuts, can be a complete barstool to do you have to start with alot of oil to loosen them up, then you may need heat, then they may snap, then you may need to drill/use an extracting tool, then you may end up damaging the thread, then you may have to have the holes re threaded.... best to take it to a garage and let them do it

Just done the same job for mastarasta47 was at It hours in the end i used a broken hack saw blade and managed to cut the shoulder of the one under the down pipe but his was well rounded get your self a set of theses m8 will undo them 99% of time. When you replace them make sure you use exhaust nuts not normal steel ones or you have the same problem again.

Plenty of oil /wd40 and leave to soak for an hour or so

Self grips on really tight then tap with a hammer normally works

speaking form my recent experience trying to get a nut off a bellhousing stud, i went through the following:

buy an impact socket and try that (worked on one of mine!)
nut splitter was ineffective in my case.
mole grips also ineffective,
penetrating oil made no difference as the nut was so fekked.
tried chiselling it round,
tried hammering a smaller socket on - still no effect.
ended up getting the thing turning by using a mate's air chisel which at the time we were trying to use to cut through the stud as a last resort.
good luck mate... can be a total nightmare when this happens!

Nut splitter is the biggest waste of money ever..
I started at 8am and finished at 9pm but I managed to do it all, regret doing it but hey.

I had to use a hack saw to cut half the nut off and use a chisel and plenty of other bits in-between and I'm cut up everywhere and probably have loads of bits of metal in my engine bay but it's done and ready for a map.

The centre section will need replacing soon as the clamp on it o the downpipe is out of shape and blowing slightly..
