Default Rolling road and final simtec map?????

Hello all,

My dad has just had his 2.5 conversion done on his V4 classic. He's extremely happy with it even though he's only got the running in map (Simtec ECU).

He's nearly done 800 miles so its about that time to have his final maps installed.

The mechanic has organised for him to meet the mapper nearly 200 miles away for this to be done and then have a rolling road as well. I'm not sure if its a live map or rolling road map that needs to be done.

He doesn't really want to travel all that way and pay for a hotel to stay overnight.

My questions are: -

Does it need to be done on a rolling road?
How much would a mapper charge to do the final map if he's already had it installed and the licence paid.
Can anyone recommend a place in the South West/Bristol area?
What is the average price of a rolling road and how long does it take?

Thanks in advance.

Why dont you drop simon (jolly green monster) a message, he usually maps on surrey rolling road (could stay at yours in surrey for the night) and couldn't come more recommended!

Stating the pros and cons of road map vs rolling road map is irrelevant, always stirs debates

Here is few mappers:

Rich@FB tuning or Duncan@Race Dynamix(he's mobile and he can come to you),Neil@Slowboy Racing

If you are chasing only BHP,RR will be best,if you are looking for both,i would suggest road and RR mapping, this will best from both.More mappers use both for best or just road mapping, because your car is used on road/street not RR.

Mapping of SimTek i think is £200-£350,but mappers price may vary i would contact everyone for correct pricing

A mix of both is the best remedy, once we have our rolling road installed next month we'll be doing the majority of the mapping on the dyno followed by some final tweaking on the road.

My understanding of the 'best' way is RR, then road tweak as RR can never fully simulate road conditions (air flow, temps etc)

I would recommend Graham Martin aka enginemapper.co.uk he is based in Wrexham where he has a RR. He is good value as he does not charge as much as most of the rest. He will also travel to you too and do a road map which he has done for me. Nothing wrong with this method

Check out Graham's 'Test Mule' thread

JGM, very very good Simtek mapper !!!

He put my pile of crap simtek map back together after a so called specialist installed it

Mine was road mapped, but Simon travels as well, or uses Surrey rolling road if you're dad comes to you

Hi,

I can road map it from his drive or roller and road map it at www.surreyrollingroad.co.uk or on a local to him rr if he wants.

I find combination of rollers and road works best but not everyone agrees or finds getting to an rr easy etc depending on their location hence I do both depending on what the customer wants.

Not really: note the careful use of language: I'm not claiming he's the best (I wouldn't know - very few, if any, would be in a position to make an objective comparison of different mappers' work) but I am saying he stands in the premier league of Subaru mappers and that you won't find anyone significantly better? Would anyone dispute that?

Out of curiosity.....would anyone on here claim to be better? *runs*

Another vote here for Bob Rawle, he's recently mapped my car and I wouldn't go to anyone else (but other mappers are available).

It's all about how 'well' you get along with the mapper, contact a few with your requirements and make a choice from there.

I've always got on well with Bob after he mapped my first Impreza, then my second and my third which he has mapped 3 times (Ecutek x 1, Simtek x 2 maps).

I've also been in touch with Simon (JGM) as well in the past prior to my first map with Bob and found him really helpful as well but there was a group buy with Bob Rawle when I was ready to get my first Impreza mapped which was convenient on time and well priced.

Thanks a lot everyone. Hope i haven't started too much of a debate.

Simon, how much will it cost if i get him up here as he's desperate for a rr print out?

No one would ever guess he's approaching 60. Now he keeps rubbing it in that his car is better than mine. I've told him i'm going to pay someone to switch the engines when he goes on holiday.

Bob Rawle has a very good reputation. I have never used him myself, but certainly would if circumstances were different (i.e. I didn't have a great relationship with Tracktive Solutions, who have never let me down and always delivered the goods for me).

There are also other very competant professionals out there.

Now... there are some mappers who frequent this board who I wouldn't trust to map my lawnmower. The trouble is, to the layman a lot of it is over peoples heads and many concern themselves with a pretty dyno graph or some notion of peak power figures... but you do tend to pick things up and see certain things that make you think about others so called professional ability, that they charge "proper" money for.

I think that's the first time I've seen someone mention Tracktive on here, I'm guessing Richard has mapped your car, are you running a Hydra ecu?

Richard has been mapping my cars since 2007 and he was instrumental to enabling my old Spec C to win the ScoobySprint Final in 2009. My old Spec C was certainly on Hydra, which managed to bang out over 600bhp on a standard position non-billet GT30 core'd turbo (running on Q16). I'm still fairly certain this hasn't been beaten to this day on that size core(although I'm sure someone will shoot me down in flames lol).

I'm getting old now, so the current car is on the OEM ECU.... but Richard is playing a key role in it's project work.

So yeah... got a lot of time for Richard.
