What engine do I have in my car identification please
Hi I recently bought a scooby wagon and the previous owner said he thought the engine had been changed to something a bit quicker at some point in the past.Could some of you guys identify what it is?Could be a load of B**L and just the original engine but just wondered.Anything else you spot good or bad please let me know as well.Cheers Tony(newbie!)

Take a look at the numbers on the block, that will give you an idea whether it's an STi lump. The only thing that I can tell from that pic is that it's an earliyish turbo engine with no AC and an airbox delete.
You may also want to inspect the ECU to see if it's anything special...

ECU is under the carpet of the passenger footwell.
Airbox delete just replaces the standard air filter and airbox with the cone filter that you've got hanging off your MAF on the left of your pic.
Don't worry about asking questions here, it's a friendly place!

LOL good job as I am going to need to ask a lot of questions.Where is the engine number located on the block?.What numbers or figures will it start with?Where can I check the number to see which engine it is?

I'd ditch the cone filter as you will see higher inlet temps and the possibility of a blown engine, you will be able to pick up a standard airbox and an sti panel filter for not much money
