help on choosing an ecu upgrade...
hi im looking at upgrading my ecu to get full potential from my mods, the car currently has the following done to it but if i turn my boost up anymore than 0.6 bar it starts back firing from engine half way through boost, 0.6 bar it boosts fine and pulls like hell.
the car is a jdm sti import 1993 (gc8 chasis number)
Chipped
hks induction kit
td05 20g turbo
470cc injectors
whalbro 255 fuel pump
reversed inet manifold
stainless hks unequal headers
47mm up pipe and 38mm external waste gate and screaer pipe
full hks exhaust 5" down pipe straight through 3" system to 5" backbox
manual boost control
dont know if it makes a difference but my actuator is not adjustable has had a plate welded and pinned in 1 place???
running 0.6 bar but is just as quick as my old 320 bhp import which i cannot understand, have been told by api engineering that with a custom ecu remap car is capable of 350+ at a steady boost.
any info on best ecu upgrade greatfully received, over boosted today after trying to up the boost and now have a servere oil leak with no idea where its coming from (looks like behind turbo, have coswrth uprated gaskets so dont think its that common problem)any info that can help???

For a road car the Apexi fits the bill nicely.
For a road/track car Simtec.
For a track car (unless your feeling flush) Syvecs is the daddy.

Just gone from apexi to simtec, and it makes a world of difference, not knocking the apexi as they do the job nicely.
But for that little extra you get a much smoother car and dual maps so you can switch between fuels, as well as antilag and launch control if desired.

I dont think thats true. Very few suffer with starting problems and id suggest those that do its a mapper problem rather than ecu problem. Mine does and has always started better on the simtek than it did on the o/e ecu

bob also fitted and mapped mine along with a few others i know that have the same problem, not bobs fault its simtek! they were apparently bringing out an upgrade to sort it out but that was 18mnths ago! if even simtek know theres a problem you lads need to do your homework.also if you dont have starting problems then your lucky id say over half the people ive spoken with have issues with simtek

I didnt know there was a starting issue athough i did read in the early days about idle issues. Ive had mine over two years now without problem.
Whats the starting problem you have? Symtoms etc?

its just crap can take 2 or 3 attempts to start idle all over the place,it started the 1st time i turned the car off after it was fitted, worst mod ive had done! im seeing bob next week to get my map tweaked so he,l have another look at it and we,l see what happens? i will say its not all the time but when you come out of your house in the morning and start (try) your car that you,v spent 40k on after a minute its starts and sounds like a bag of nails its not the best feeling in the world exspecially when people are staring thinking what a waste of money,i know theres nothing elso wrong with the car,my m8 has the same prob in his car and even had the ecu sent back to simtek which they apparently fixed,or not!

ok interesting. I understand you frustration. I wouldnt be doing with it either. Infact had it been like that on my car it would have been removed as quick as it was fitted. I do know the eml light takes a little longer to come on than the other ignition lights. Im talking a second if that. If i stall it for instance and the car wont start till its illuminated. I wonder if this is the same from cold. Maybe your cranking just a little to quick for it. Worth a try.

As for ECU, i would use megasquirt as i am happy with the tuning interface, but go with whatever ecu your tuner is happy tuning.

My car started perfectly both before and after the Simtek was installed plus no issues at all with idling either, perhaps this could be down to some faulty Simtek hardware then?
The last I heard is that the knock control was coming but definitely was not imminent, thank god I have a KS3.

I dont think you need both. The ks3 is better in my opinion. Id have it over the knocklink. My knocklink was bought and fitted long before the ks3 was availble which is why i have both. Also my knocklink has the lights fitted into the dash so to remove it means a new dash pod hence i left it in and use both

syvecs all the way.........about £1600 fitted and mapped........seems pricey but ask anyone else out there and its hard to beat it on price for the ammounbt of features you get.......its a one stop ecu
