All single scroll turbo's are going to feel laggy, the bigger you go the laggier they will feel, avcs can only do so much on a 2ltr engine, its not a miracle worker you have to look towards turbo technology, low friction roller bearing billet (sp) turbo's but those will cost you more that 600 quid.

Maybe you should chat with a mapper before you take the plunge and buy a md series turbo as i do believe they would push the wrx engine to its limit when setup to their full potential. You need to decide what you want to gain performance wise and how much you are willing to spend. I started off wanting a 20G, tubular headers and almost 400hp. Now i am going for a brand new vf48, ported headers and matched uppipe, also going for a methanol mix which should hopefully see 370-380hp. I want to have a decent fast road setup with good early spool and not have to wait til 4k plus for full boost with a bigger turbo.

i doubt very much you will see a md series turbo for sale in this bracket range £500-£600, think the last 321h to become avavilable sold for around £900. VF or TD series prob best bet around this price

Regularly the turbo is blamed for lag. Sometimes it is the turbo but more often than not it is an incorrect or conflicting spec or poor mapping.
20G new, 12 month warranty £850. Typically a 380 bhp turbo on petrol but I suppose it depends on what rolling road and fuel you are using. Many people claim my 20G exceeds 400 bhp easily.
18G, new. 12 months warranty £725. Genuine 360 plus bhp turbo and if you have lag with one of my 18Gs start looking for problem areas other than the turbo.
The 18G and 20G have ported exhaust inlets and uprated actuators.
I also have a new AFP 18G here that can go for £650. This was taken PX against a new 20G.

Like I said above, if you have an 18G and it is laggy, providing it is a properly made turbo you might be better off investigating other causes of lag before you decide to invest in a new or second replacement turbo. The logic of this is quite straight forward in that you will still have the same lag issues after fitting an alternative turbo if the problem is not the turbo in the first place and again I have to say the number of people who blame the turbo when it is something else is quite considerable.
