Default Average engine build time

was quoted November by my garage for a 2.3 600hp build. without going into the specifics of the build, does that sound like a fair wait?

Sounds as though they have plenty on for it to take that long ... 5mths is a long time to wait ,depends when you need it .

whoa there. did an insurance policy just come through fella. that aint gonna be cheap. is the car in now? or is it they cant do your build until November? if its the latter then that bodes well as they would seem to be a busy garage. if its the former, then i would be taking it to another subaru engine builder. (having said that my new engine has been 4 years, yes you read that right 4 years in the building)

Depends on exactly what they are going to do.
Our average engine build time is 4-6 weeks for a drive in drive out job.
I am assuming as you have quoted 600bhp, it includes all the associated anciliaries. If so it doesn't sound out of the way to give you it back in November ran in and ready to thrash, but sounds like a bit long just to build it.
As with most of our jobs, they will probably working on it a small amount of that time and waiting for parts, services etc for the majority of it.
