Default Ebay VF48, ripped off - be aware!

Ok, here's the deal - bought one of these ebay '20 mile' old turbos from NI.

It was delivered fairly swiftly but when unwrapped, the exhaust housing was pretty pretty grubby & there was a fair bit of play in all directions on the impellor shaft, sometimes just briefly kissing the housing. There was none on the VF22 I had taken off.

I emailed the seller with my concerns but had no response.

I then tried the shaft on a brand new Garret unit we had on the shelf & there was a similar amount of play - so after asking around, the general consensus was that oil may take up the play.

Bob Rawle mapped it soon after & it then during a RR session we discovered wouldn't hold boost in 3rd gear & the turbo would scream at full boost.

I emailed the seller, opened a dispute & I was told to return it & he would send me another.
I removed the turbo last week after only 200 miles & found the housing had witness marks where the impellor had been hitting it.

It was sent back to the seller & I received this:

'hello. sir. i have recived turbo on saturday. im not happy with the condision of the turbo i recived back. the blades are bent stupid and there is alot of damage to the blade housing.. how did you managed to get the turbo in that state.. the turbo i sent you did no leave mein that state. you didnt even rap the turbo up in bubble rap sending it back. this is my number please call me regards.'

I spoke to the seller today on the phone & he is now saying that it should have been 'run in' & it shouldn't have been mapped at all & that Bob Rawle had caused the damage it by mapping it!!!

So now I am left turbo-less & £600 out of pocket.. Rumour has it that these VF48's 'came out of the back door' of Cosworth, so please be aware of 2011scooby123 on ebay.

Cheers mate, wish I'd done the same.

He won't replace or refund but he'll let the ebay dispute decide. And he still has my knackered turbo!

I have seen these turbos have slight lift in the shafts even when new as you say the oil does sometimes take up the play in the shaft, some do some dont for some reason, I have heard rumours about these ebay turbos being dodgy and coming off blown up cars and not the cossy ones

Your being mugged!!!

There is no way to "run-in" a turbo, (mechanicaly)

All you have to do is allow enough time for the oil to get to the turbo and NEVER switch off the enigine after high boost situations, allow at least 3 minutes for the turbo to "wind down"

A very good condition turbo should have virtually no play in the shaft in any direction, a little bit of vertical play is acceptable in used turbo's but lateral play is unacceptable

How did you pay the guy? If it is through Paypal , you will get the money back from them and then they chase him for the money. eBay looks after buyers so you have a very good chance of getting the full £600 back. It's worth calling eBay customer support and paypal , in my own experience they have always been very helpfull and tend to resolve issues quickly.

when you buy something from internet or over telephone you have right to return (cooling off period) i'm not sure exactly how long it is. You should get your money back speak to ebay direct either phone or online support tell them seller has turbo back and will not refund. They will refund and chase him for money like felix79 says. i've had this problem before and they gave me it straight back.

agree with felix79, I've dealt with paypal and ebay and they will look after the buyer. it might take a while but you will get your cash back mate.

I've heard to many stories like this, thats why I went to Harvey and go a perfect turbo and people like him rely on reputations on sites like this. When you get your cash back use someone on here with a good reputation, maybe be slightly more expensive but well worth it

Tricky.........if you were fitting it into a standard OEM car then you might have a case, unfortunately you fitted it and had the design parameters changed outwith the original OEM specification.

In common sense terms you are in the right but in law the old adage Res ipsa Loquitor applies and you have no legal remedy

Sale of goods act applies doesnt it? Not fit for purpose, but as stated above - You were using them outside of the parameters, if you get screwed over then threaten him with Trading Standards, he wont want the hassle and just refund, good luck!!

That other thread is one sad story. Hope everyone gets their situation resolved. Money is hard-earned and to lose it, is well, a kick in the nads.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the positive comments guys

He tells me he's run a VF34 on his Classic for a year without mapping.. I had to have mine mapped due to putting the 2.5 turbocharger on, injectors, 3" exhaust & one of Harvey's up-pipes.

Hopefully ebay/paypal will see sense - I'm not trying to pull the wool over anyones eyes, I just want a working turbo.
