Default Spotlight bars.

Just a random question, don`t know if there is any point or not but just asking.

Right I have 4 Cibie Super Oscar Driving lights in my garage, big large spotlights.

I was watching old rally clips on Youtube and had a small brain wave when I saw the cars with 4 cibies on the front.

Has anyone made a removable light bar to make the rally look, rather than getting those ugly pods.

My kind of daft Idea was so I could make use of these great lamps and also have them so they could be removed without leaving too much evidence.
The chances are they`d only be on for rare occasions, but think they could look ok.

This is a quick photohop.

So has anyone done anything similar or am I on my own yet again??
They wouldn`t be to make it go faster, or to fit anyone elses ideas.
Just a random Idea I had and that I thought I may try, also with HIDS in the Cibies they would be stupidly bright.

What does Nasioc other than saying its an american thing to do lol.

Its not for a look but to be practical, as I do like driving around unlit roads and lanes, and there are a fair few here.

My main thought was that its different, everyone does massive scoops, or despoilered, etc etc and think its different as I`ve never seen one done like it.

Lol just how to work out how to do it, in a way that can be removable without showing its fitted.
Have seen these.

With this being more or less what I`d be after.

Thing is too that I will be getting my car painted, so was going to fit these lights and then stick some Rally graphics on that I was given ages ago, full Subaru Vinyl.
As if I don`t like it its of no concern as I`ll get her resprayed, but if I like it then saves some money for a while lol.

Decent light pods would be my choice: you can arrange for them to be removable using stainless fittings and R clips, once they are off, all you see is four stainless top hat holes in the bonnet.

And imagine one with four HIDs mounted

Not sure if you can fit Super Oscars, mind.........

Nah don`t want to drill into my bonnet, and I don`t like the light pods.
The Oscars are H1 and would need adapting to work HID, but I`ll give them a try before I butcher them to fit.

But was thinking of frame that hooks around the upper bumper lip, then bolts in place and pulls tight behind the grille. A stabiliser bar across the front to stop movement, and then that should give a good base for the mounts.

And 4 Super Oscars with HID`s will be a LOT brighter than any light pod as they are awesome lights.

I ran HID's in my cibies, you could see for miles. The only problem i had was the reflection from road signs.

Your car, your choice. Light pods = 90's/00's rallying.
Lamp bars = 70s/80's rallying.

I can see how it would work, except that the bumper is plastic, and with four dustbin-sized lamps hanging on it, is liable to flex......

Nah........modern lamp-pods use HIDs, and the lamps are MADE for HID. Modern technology is better than uprated 60's technology any day.

Still be awesome, mind.

And I understand the previous post about reflection from roadsigns, running 2 lots of HIDs myself.

Yeah I know what you mean but Privateers have been using light bars, and also on the Safari Rally they made a comeback.
I`m not after a WRC replica, as that would cost me loads and it doesn`t appeal as I`d never get it right so would look crap imho.
By going and doing this

Then it wont affect any other part of the car, as I don`t want to go drilling holes in the bonnet.

But bolted to the bumper panel, around the bumpers top lip, then back under and then the lower part onto the rad support as I`ve no slats in my lower grille. My only body modification would be a second upper grille so I can adapt if specially for this, and some longer bolts here and there.

As for HIDS in the Cibies I was gonna borrow a set of H1 HIDS and see what the beam pattern is like, as the 150watt bulbs eat alternators for fun, and I`d like to lighten the load. And if the HIDS make the beam crap then back to Halogen. But the Oscars I have used to shine a hell of a long way, and were superb for night driving.

dunx on here has put H1 HIDs into his Hella 1000FF lights that were made for H1 halogen, and the result is not much different to my 1000FFs that were made for HID.

I expect your Cibies will be likewise: they were pretty good in their day, so why not?

Nothing ventured nothing gained lol.

Just got to figure out how to make it work without them bouncing around, I`ll find a way.

That was always my problem on MkI and MkII Escorts.

The upper pair of driving lights, I bought a large Jubilee clip, cut it opposite the screw thread, opened it straight, and bolted one end to the top of the light unit and one to the slam panel just under the bonnet front. Made good adjusters too.

The bottom pair of lights were Lucas LR700 "Flamethrowers",which had a MUCH wider, more solid fixing, and didn't suffer from vibration at all.

They were the first lights I uprated: from a 48W BPF bulb to a 55W halogen. Talk about spot beam: I reckon you could read by them at a mile away

They must be like my Oscars, will get a pic later up against the standard fogs, for a size comparison, but they were like turning daylight back on.
There is a part of Swansea on Gower where your on a rural hill and its open, where I used to sit with them on my roof on my jeep and easily lit up houses over a mile away lol.
Police pulled me before and told me they were on, (was driving with the covers off), I said "Really?? Nah they weren`t on!" to which the copper started getting shirty, so I switched them on and said "Now they are on!!" the copper took one look and walked off lol.

They are actual spots too, aren't they, not driving lights?

I used to like two spots, two driving.

Yep spots, but with 4 you set the two upper ones directly infront, and the lower two overlap and do the sides, that way you get decent front coverage and your dipped fill the shortfall (to an extent).
But should look different when fitted, and I have a few spare driving lights around so could go mad, but I don`t wanna look that stupid.

The lens is why I recon HID`s would make a massive difference as there is no chance of glare from the glass ridges as there aren`t any, just a focused bulb. Will give it a try.

After a LOT of looking around on tinternet, I`ve come across these pics.

Slimline Balasts for HIDs will fit inside the light making it look a LOT cleaner.

This is main beam, 2 x Hella spots and 4 x roof lights, so 600watts.

This is 2 x 35 watts HID in the spotlamps and main beam. So 120watts.

The Australian Ute in the tests after the Halogen spots were removed.

From the threads they show a little (and I mean tiny) amount of beam scatter, so in a pure spotlight this will be of benefit as the lights will have a little more width. This won`t be a problem as they aren`t to be used when traffic is in front, or cars are on coming.

Should be daylight infront with 4 x 50watt 5000K HID`s!!

The only problem i found when i had spots many moons ago, is that they are great until you have to turn them off for oncoming traffic, its like being thrust into darkness which is not so bad if the road is straight but its usually in the twisties, they also make it very difficult to see the beams of any oncoming traffic, which i found a bit dangerous for me and them.

Tbh I`m only gonna do it as a temp thing anyways, which I can take on and off they won`t be permanent. And I wanna go down the HID route as they are off my 4x4 and usually live on its roof, so only get used off road anyways, and I have 4 driving lights and others to see where normally you can`t see.

I know exactly what you mean tho, and the risk of smashing them up with stone chips etc.

No worries, just been testing one up Bont mountain and I forgot how bright one was, made the Vectra`s main beam look like side lights, its the 100watt bulbs having 4 they with 4 60watt driving lights 100watt main beams, and a sound system melted my 4x4`s piddling 70amp alternator into a fused lump, I have had to upgrade it and run a 2.5 Transit battery on the 1.6 lol.

Me ! I run HID Hella 1000FF's currently, but used to have a pair of PIAA H4 driving lamps fitted, these are superb because they have a main and a dip beam. Fantastic for those oncoming car moments... even if technically illegal.

dunx

P.S. Buy a spare grille and chop for clearance ?

Gonna make a bracket that hopefully will pass through the grille, as being preface there in nothing in between the slats, and I`ve no slats in my bumper anyway.
