well thats tricky situ! being a used engine they cant guarantee the work. Were you present when they ran it for 20 mins? damage will be bent valves possible damage to piston so you will need head regrind new valves and worst case new piston/pistons,others will confirm if im correct but fair few hundred quid if not close to 1k!

i wassnt but both the owner and the fella fixing it have admitted to it running for 20 mins. that wasnt the answer i was looking for im realy starting to lose faith now with these cars.

all they said was after a compression test the valves are stuck open and all compression is going out the inlet manifold.they have no idea why this has happened.some others have said that maybe the timing belt jumped a gog but the garage wont have non of that. thing is after my sister passing away two weeks ago i was gonna build this in her memory only for it to go pig again.

So the garage supplied the engine from their stock, that is they had legal title over the engine they fitted for you.......or did you provide them with a used engine which you sourced yourself ?

it was from me mate but i seen it running fine and after a talk 2day they have said its the hydrolic lifters that are stuck and keeping the valves open.sadly after talking 2 someone else who builds scoob engines they have said that it sounds like the timing belt has slipped and bent the valves and at worst piston damage.as u can imagine im very very pissed at the mo and whats worse is they maintain that the belt is fine.geeeerrrrrrrrr

its very unlikely that the belt jumped! The cams or crank would have to move to put the timing out.Either way get the garage to sort it after all they fitted it.And to be frank they sound like muppets! any mechanic that knows his onions would be able to give you a reason to why the damage occured heck they got the car they should know!I hope you get it sorted mate and like you mate said it could of caused damage to the piston but at least it happend on turn over and not when you were driving it.

You had a new belt/pulleys fitted though didn't you
If you've had a new belt........fk em it's there fault
If you cut the expense of a new belt take it on the chin

tbh it sounds like who ever has done the engine is not too clued up on scoobys, and i agree as above was in their hands i would be expecting them to fix it, but the get out clause is you supplied the engine, been in the exact same boat mate supplying an engine that was ok, for it to be fitted and running fine!!! got 50 miles out it the lifters stuck, NO GUARANTEE on internals etc as you supplied it, if you got them to strip and check engine before fitting would be diffrent.

as the man from fife says matey sadly even though you got them to fit a new cam belt the engine was supplied by you and the working/condition of the engine is down to you.
unless the engine is stripped and the fault can be identified to be caused by a cam belt failure/fault then the garage is not liable for anything.

I thought even the older ej20's were safe engines too. I.e the valves do not come in contact with pistons should the cambelt fail?

OK then a few questions to ask.
1. Was the engine like for like? WRX to WRX, STi to STi V3 to V3 etc.
2. Have the garage done work on Subaru's before? Experience is very important.
3. What age and mileage is the engine your putting in?
4. Why was the car off the road for 12 months?
Just trying to get some possible history before anything else is blamed.

When I took the car in the owner asked if I wanted to do a deal.he puts a new engine in my car that I supply and I paint his house(I'm a decorator). I've done his place and got the engine for them and now I'm struggling to get my car done.what seemed like a good deal has become a nightmare.
Trooper the ansewers are mate
1) import wrx to import
2) no but he has an evo 5 he works on along with meny other performance cars
3) 95 wrx with 72,000
4) that one is cus I couldn't afford it to start with but I'm guessing my car is not important enough.

im struggling to understand why the lifters are seized open after more than 25 yrs in the branch the only time ive ever experienced something similiar is on older opels when the wrong oil is used and the valves get seized in there guides tbh it doesnt happen over night, and not all of them at the same time
is this something that happens to scooby motors and if so why, it would have to be a manufacture defect that id be extremly surprised hadnt been sorted pre production or soon after first release
any scooby mec out there to answer this one
it is easy enough to start a motor with the cam belt fitted wrongly and to then run that engine.
1, have they removed the cam belt and refitted it from scratch.
2 have they removed cams and turned engine over and taken comp test.
3. have they checked the lifters while cams are removed
4. are any valve springs broken
5, do they have endoscope so they can look at the valves in situ
6, how long ago was it since the donor engine was running

yes if there is enough clearance on the head so that the valves dont touch (not sure on scoobys) or if the lifters arnt expanding which means the valves will be closed all the time, this would of course mean the engine wont start. youve posted earlier theres no compression and that the valves are stuck open though
ps being able to turn an engine over deffo doesnt meanthe valves arnt bent

the lifters are stuck open, but the valves aren't bent? is possible when i think about it, older vauxhalls, like the MK3 Astra are designed so that when the cambelt snaps, the pistons can't smash the valves.
i'm not scooby mechanic, but i am a mechanic, and 11years in the trade i've never ever seen ALL lifters seized open, seen them seized shut but never open. I fail to see how if the engine has been running that they would all suddenly seize shut.
I'd personally like them to remove the cams, pop a lifter out and check it
Sorry this isn't much help mate, but i do hope you get it sorted soon.
