48 offset is fine on a bugeye mate as thats what i ran with on my old bug.
On the importing side, i imported a set off Rota formula mesh from the US last year.
I got them from http://www.wheeldude.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=90
They cost me £1400 for the 4 18 x 8.5 wheels, 4 x 235/45/18 Toyo proxes, wheel nuts & all taxes & duties.

You'll always pay taxes/duties mate. I'm getting a bit addicted to buying bits from america that you can't get here.
If the seller marks the parcel as personal or a return you wont pay import tax, but the seller probably wont do it, as its a criminal offense. Even if they do, customs will probably check them due to the size. My wife has got away with jewelery (pandora nut) and thats probably just down to the size of the parcel.
My advice mate is to take it into account. I just see it as, the fee of having something a bit unique compared to what you get here. Also make sure the seller fills in the paper work correctly, one of my parts got stuck in customs for 2 weeks.
