Default Best Oil?

I have been tearing my hair out reading forum after forum about what the best engine oil to us, do I use 5w or 10w, fully synthectic or semi synthectic. It has confused me so much that I am unable to think straight. I am running a 2004 WRX and has been remapped to 340 BHP and is due a oil change i would appreciate some advice as to what the best oil to use is? what grade etc. Thanks in advance.

It's subjective - people who've used an oil with out problems generally say it's great, however a month later after an engine blow up, it's the worst ever lol

Generally, use what it says in the manual, or speak to a tuner directly. On here, as Tim say's, you'll be even more confussed.

10w-50 titan race pro s (silkolene) fully systhetic in my05sti mapped to 340/350 is what I am running

as I was told these engines run better tight and 5w-anything is to thin
(I feel a can of worms may be opening)

OP, you will get so Many different answers here, I would suggest you start with the recommended oils in the handbook (though just the fully synth ones).
For an example of what I run in a nearly standard jdm sti, a fully synth 5w40 oil, good when cold 5 weight) good to get up to temp quickly and provide more than adequate protection to the engine.
Stick within what is recommended in the handbook and you will be ok

Here's a likely reply you'll get from Opie:

I would use a 5w-40 synthetic and you will find those through the link below.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XFS, Fuchs Supersyn, Shell Helix and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

That should be fine, people use different grades of oil and different filters, nasioc did 12 pages on filters and 7 on oil and in the end they were undecided If in doubt use the handbook.

My Hawkeye hand book says 5-30w, but I am mapped to 333BHP so on recommendation I now have been using a fully synthetic 5-40w of which I have been using for the last 30000 miles with no problems. Titan race pro s (silkolene) fully synthetic

I always used 10W40 or road now on 10W50 on a forged engine with track in mind.

I stick to magnetec 10/40 change it every 5000miles and filter obviously. "protects from the moment you turn the key "lol. Used mobil1 ONCE and big ends went within 100 miles (was at 153000 miles at the time). Maybe coincidence . Now got sti cdb and back to magnetec. Just my penny's worth

Usually use Millers fully synthetic 10/40 along with a HKS oil filter (they are a pretty pink colour), I did an oil change this weekend and used 10/60 though.
Both are fine buddy. Everybody has different opinions when it comes to oil, just because somebody's friends sisters boyfriends uncle had his Scooby blow up while using 10/whatever it put that person off using it. The fact that his engine was past it's sell by date and ready to go doesn't even register.
If you stick with what the book says then you can't be far wrong, and that way if it goes pop you can blame Subaru, lol.

I am changing the oil on mine very soon (55 STi PPP) and I looked on here and checked the oil manufacturers sites. Fuchs said 5-30 in all variations and both Castrol and Millers state 5-30 bog standard, or 10-60 for their top spec oil, which is what I intend to use. I will be buying the Millers 10-60 CFS full synthetic ester oil because I want to put in the best quality oil avaliable.

Then go for a 5w40 fully synthetic like Motul or Millers, the 10w60 takes ages to get up to temp and its pretty thick stuff, it wont lubricate as well due to not flowing as well plus thicker is not always better!

I can understand 5-40 being a good compromise between the standard 5-30 and the top spec 10-60, but then why do the oil manufacturers not recomend this grade?
When I was first looking at what oil to use, I was going to put in 5-30 magnatec as this was the general spec. I assume that Subaru use 5-30?
I then decided that I would rather use a fully synthetic and nearly went for Castrol Edge 10-60, but looking through oil threads on here I couldn't find any recomendations for Castrol. So that is why I looked at what Miller recommends as they seem to be held in a high regard with the Subaru community of owners and tuners.

Its not recommended because it just takes too long to warm up, the engine doesnt produce the heat for a 60 hot weight oil, hence why you should really be looking at a 5w40 fully synthetic, I dont personally like the 5w30 and I think they only now recommend a fully synthetic on the new age cars (its not recommended on classics btw, big warning page about that!).
Then there is things like oil shear, and a 10w60 is quite bad for that

Well, I'm easily swayed. So I think you have talked me into getting the Millers CFS 10-40. I did think 60 sounded rather high, but assumed that it should be right as its recomended. I would be much happier using a 10-40 as apposed to 5-30. Cheers.

What the 5w30 fully synth? think it was discussed a fair bit on here, if you want the bit about the 5w30 on a classic then you need to find someone with a manual, cant remember what page its on but talks about cold weather and not over revving the engine.
