Default so coolant....

ok so you may or may not know the ongoing saga...
i brought a car, it started leaking coolant
the rad got changed and it all seemed great
id explained my fears about HG, but he said no def was the rad that was at fault

managed a good 700 miles to cornwall and back, stuck in loads of traffic without any overheating or issues and coolant level seemed to be at max in the expansion tank whenever i looked (yes i know)

this morning i checked and the coolant was bearly visible, the car had been sat 14 hours at least.
topped it up to the max line on the expansion tank again
and checked the coolant box near the intercooler and that was topped up fine

now prob paranoia
but should coolant completely disappear like that in less than a week?
do other peoples do this?

also i know the engines spose to get hot, but mine seems damn hot
when i open the bay after a while driving with some A road mixed in the bonnet stay is bloody hot to touch

anyhow prob paranoia

doesn't sound right. I've dealt with 3 HG failures over the last 18 months (on 2 different engines). A healthy engine will expand to fill th expansion tank when hot and reduce to the level you filled it to when it cools down fully. If it's sucking away all the coolant from the expansion tank then it must be expelling more from somewhere under pressure (radiator or hose possible, but HG more likely).

Get a sniffer test done at a garage after warming it up. Also if you remove rad/filler cap and rev it and see little bubbles rise up that is most likely a shot HG.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it doesn't sound good.

what i dont get is ive had two garages look at it now
the 1st didnt find a fault
the 2nd said it was an obvious fault with the rad, hence the new rad, and def not a HG problem

going to phone them monday and find out if they did any other tests rather than just see a faulty rad and blame that for all the issues

nah they seemed to do a good job on the rad, well recommended on here etc
and its been a few weeks since it was done
been checking it every week, and even a few days after getting back from my cornwall hols' the coolant level was showing smack on where it was when the rad was done
only seems to have 'disappeared' in the last week or so

this is true :P
the old wheels finish on ebay in an hour or two, sat at £100 atm

the cars still driving fine, although if i try and pull away abit quick at junctions in a mood (only twice so far heh) the car bogs down alot
i guess more revs, or just less being a twit and let the car get rolling before planting it

be interesting to see what the garage did HG test wise Monday
i did tell them i was very concerned about it being a HG problem
they told be they were very sure it was just the rad

"an" to "acrimony" is impressive :P

could an air lock still be there after 3 weeks and 600-700 miles?

A simple actually.

If it hadn't been checked and topped up in that time then yes it would still be there.
