Default NEW ECU?

The details:

Car - Turbo 2000 Classic X reg (2001)

Problem - Fan has stopped working, problem has been traced back to the ECU.

Temporary solution - manual overide switch has been made, sits next to the fog switches, auto switches off when engine is off.

Outstanding issue - as a long term solution can I simply purchaise a new / 2nd hand ECU and swap the old one out?

Would it be better to take it to a subaru dealership and have them fix the current ECU - or will this cost significantly more?

Should I just put up with the problem? Wont be able to re-sell the car with this problem.
