A word of warning folks...
Just been on the M6 to Birmingham & back and there are some SPECS cameras on both the North & Southbound carriageways in the roadworks. It's a 50mph limit and loads of people were just flying through blissfully unawares!!!
On the way back, we got a pic -
Just thought you might wanna know, but of course wa would "never" speed ever officer!

No, they are still front on...
I was sat in the back, the pic is from the side window. I took one from the front and it wasn't great, so this one was better.
So, you could still hide behind a lorry if need be!

Well, that's what I think, but my mate in the Evo was not keen on trying to find out!
I know a lad that works for a software company that do similar number recognition systems (for other uses) so I'll ask him and see what he reckons.
It's ok for bikes though, they can't get done at all!

This may sound like a dumb question, but please take into consideration that I am a woman
How can these camera's assess your speed, they have them between J7 & J9 of the M62, but there are no road markings like the other speed camera's?

AFAIK speed cameras never use road markings to assess your speed - they use other methods (radar maybe?). Those are just for when you dispute it in court and they can whip out two pictures in sequence with a measured time gap to calculate the speed.

The specs camera's (We have them in Nottingham ) use Number Plate recognition. The first camera stores you reg number then a couple of miles down the road the second camera recognises you and the system works out your average speed between the two camera's.
Slowing down for the camera will not work!!!!

Bit confused about the Specs on the M6 between 5 and 6. I go through that section everyday doing about 55 average. The speed limit in the roadworks is 40, but I keep getting passed by cars doing 60+. Surely, if these cameras were in use word would get round and people would be more careful? Does anyone know if they are actually working and if so what speed they are set for.
The guy on 5th gear mentioned a metal ring in the floor which creates some sort of electromagnetic field?? I looked at the floor just before these 4 cameras and each one had a small white line with an arrow pointing to it. (But only on the outside lanes).
It is my opinion that these cameras are dummy's/not working. (But I will not be going through any faster to test it).
Surely, one camera can not cover all three lanes (the white line/arrow thing seems to confirm this) and the camera's seem to be aimed at the outside lanes. So are you safe in the other two?
Somebody must know something about these.....

Chod.
The wire in the road jobby is for the forward facing Gatso type camera's not the digital Specs cameras.
Not sure about how many lane's the specs can read number plates from but the Nottingham cameras worked on both lanes of the dual carraige way.
Did they say on 5th gear that a single specs system can catch 1500 cars an hour.

I am sure the ones in Brum are not working, though you never know. The trouble with the SPEC's cameras is that you don't know if they are working or not. As said above, they use number plate recognition and measure your average speed through any two of them via a time distance calculation IIRC. So, no, slowing down for them does not work whatsoever.
You can be done within two cameras out of any stretch of them, keep your speed down through them, that is all I can say. Not worth the risk.
There is a website telling you all about them, if I manage to look I will post the url, I am sure someone on here will beat me to it though
Cheers,
Michelle.

the speed limit IS 40MPH in the junction 6 section.
The odd thing is the last camera is actually after the end of the roadworks sign, under new legislation you dont have to wait for the national speed limit sign to do 70MPH, you can now treat the end of roadworks sign as the start of the national speed limit so they have screwed up.
I always cruise through there at 45MPH and then floor it at the end of roadworks sign, never had any problem. I wouldnt like to try above 50MPH myself though.

I went through the roadworks on the M6 around last September and there was a Specs up on the gantry even then in the 40 limit - interestingly only above the outside lane.

Did anyone read the thread last week on number plates that you can turn on and off?I never found out how much£ they were or how you stood legally if using them.Anyone shed any light.

I can't remember where I heard this but I seem to remember a rumor that there where leal questionmarks regarding the SPECS system. It obviously discrminates against bikes but also lorries because it is harder to read the numberplate. Legally this system contravenes EC regulations by decriminating against members of the population. As a result the system is still being trialed.
www.UKspeedtraps.co.uk seem to thing they are in general use though.

I came across these about a month ago on my way to London and back. Spotted them after a couple of miles on the southbound journey in daylight, fortunately I'd bucked the trend and was trundling along at 35-40mph whilst everyone else blasted past.
Some of them are not painted, but have a 12" square yellow panel behind them on the gantry/sign, so they're not easy to spot if you're caught unawares.
On the way home (early evening and it was going dark) I again trundled through and was getting passed by everything including wagons and artics. It's not like a Gatso flash, it's quite dim and you really need to be looking straight at it, plus they only flash once.
So as far as I'm concerned they're live. Whether anyone is being ticketed off them is another matter.
