Default French 98 octane petrol.

I've always used this stuff for the Scoob when abroad, in France, with no problems ...........until the last time I went. It's even available at tiny wayside garages and tiny village supermarkets, and LOADS of the French use it.

Now I'd LIKE to think the fuel wasn't part of my engine's eventual demise.
BUT: has anyone any details?
And how much octane booster per tankful would I need to approximate V-Power?
I'm using NF Race Formula.

TIA

Would it be worth having a second map for 95-97ron fuel for when you go to France Jeff? Next time you're up at Harveys?

Can't answer your actual question, sorry bud

Just come back from Austria where i saw 100 octane v-power, so would have thought France would have the same, unless there's a legitimate reason why they wouldn't?

Aye. i filled up with this stuff in germany. The difference was impressive. If only we had it over here.

When its convenient, I only ever fillup at tesco or sainsbury (99 or super) Pretty sure these people wouldnt be selling regular unleaded through their v power pumps and pocketing the extra 8p a litre.

I have to say, if using varying fuel from varying outlets, I think it would be wise just to map the car to the minimum allowable RON that the fuel standards dictate.

In the case of BS7800:2006 fuel, thats would be 97RON and 86MON. (yes, even for vpower, the minmum allowable legal requirement is 97RON).

Not sure what EN number French "super" fuels are made to, but usually BS and EN are interchangable

All Euro fuels come under the one same EN228 standard, which states in the foreword that:

Regarding table 1, the requirements for the research octane number and motor octane number of premium grade unleaded petrol (designated ‘Super Plus’ by some petrol suppliers in Germany) are as follows:
RON: at least 98,0
MOZ: at least 88,0
All other requirements are identical to those specified for premium grade unleaded petrol.
(my emphasis in the above)

Default Le Mans next week

With Le Mans next weekend Iand many of us going thought it time to resurrect his thread.

Is French fuel really as bad as rumoured, I have difficulty believing it.

I would guess if the pump is marked 98RON it must be OK for a couple of fill ups, it just may not have the nice additives that would make you comfortable in the long run. I would also assume that SUPER is most likely 97RON so OK if pushed

What do others think?

10ml per 10litres ie 1:1000 is a good everyday dose.

Hey John, what do you need if you can only find 95 ron and are mapped for 99 Ron?

Andy, a bottle of NF Race Formula is worth 6 whole octane. The recommended dose is 1/3rd of a bottle (i.e. 2 octane) to 50 litres, which would increase 95RON to 'only' 97.

I've read on here that increasing the RON/fuel ratio with the NF, doesn't magically yield any higher overall RON e.g. adding 2/3rds to 50 litres WON'T therefore gain you 4 octane.

Must admit I'm a bit confused. Could you use 95 if you chucked a bottle of NF in it, assuming you couldn't find anything else?

Yes you can add it to any UL. But as per my explanation, it will only increase 95 to 97.... But your car is mapped for 99.

Just seen this............and guess what? I came down mostly off boost, (to save fuel, and got 33mpg from a 400bhp 2.5 litre), and on V-Power etc, but have since filled up with supermarket 98 octane and saw knock on the KnockLink almost straight away as soon as I used boost

It wasn't just a bit, either, it went right to the big red LED

Good job I brought a dozen bottles of Millers Octane Booster with me. Now I have to wait until I refill it to use boost, so I can put some in and be sure of it getting mixed.

Find a bumpy bit of road to stir it ! And don't forget the un-used fuel being circulated via the pressure regulator will soon mix it in.

dunx

P.S. Have a nice time ! I'm a pedestrian... chuck one bottle in and monitor the knocklink !

On my old WRX mapped on Esso Supreme 97 RON, when I got caught short and had no choice but to put in the much maligned BP Ultimate 97, the PFC's knock CEL went mental.

I think I'll do that later dunx, I have 18 breeze blocks to shift, and that with a bad back, plus drilling the wall has sprained my left thumb when the drill bit caught and the drilling machine twisted in my hands.
The fuel is now down to 2/3 tank, so can get a good mixing. I'll put half a bottle in, drive round, put another half in and drive again. Bumpy roads? Here in France? Have to be in the villages, their main roads and even their D roads are pretty good, much better that ours. They leave the village roads bumpy, (NOT potholed, just bumpy), so as to encourage slower speeds. Works for me.

No safety clutch?

I did that once (once being the operative word). Boring a hole for the airconditioning pipes in our office using a TCT hole cutter and a normal plain Jane SDS drill. The drill jammed whilst I was at the top of the ladder, it broke free of my grip (wrenching my wrist in the process) making me slip forwards, then spun round and whacked me full on the jaw and nearly knocked me off the ladder!

Broke the teeth off the hole cutter too.

After that I went straight round my cousin's to borrow his drill which had a clutch.

Took nearly two hours to cut a hole in that wall - and I needed to cut two holes. Office used to be part of a early 1900's brick factory, so for some reason they saw fit to use the world's hardest clay bricks when building it

Anyhoo; Run it down to three quarters of a tank, add octane booster and do a few slaloms...that'll mix it!

Chuck one in and it will help now, an excess won't have a deterimental effect.

IMHO.

P.S. Just strapped my engine to a pallet in the garage !

Nope, no safety clutch

Spent today removing the old kitchen sink, cupboard under it and a few tiles........they were set on cememnt and came off in shards, that was the bit that took longest. No water or sink in kitchen now, water from garden tap only

Off out to put some O/B in now, then drive it a while.
