Yeah, I think that's the car that was just keyed on every panel and was written off because of it!

I'd take a chance if I didn't already have one!

There are so many up for sale at the moment that unless the owner could show me what the damage was prior to repair I would look else where

It could be worth a closer look.
It depends on what the damage actually was of course as to what specifically to look out for and being Category D will affect the re-sale if/when the times comes. It looks tidy enough from the pictures though so it could be a bit of a bargain for the mileage.
I'd be asking for more details first though, especially about the damage caused to it.

Oh, and don't ruin this one with stickers, Neil!

I was looking at this its definitely worth a cheeky offer to see how keen they are to shift it but wouldn't pay £9500 for it as a cat D

Its still Cat D even if it was just keyed - and as such its still a bit too expensive. If you buy it your always going to have a bit of a problem selling it.

Personally £8K would be acceptable - yes its low miles but the Cat D moniker will forever make a bitch to sell.

Not at all. I am registered with Co-Part salvage Auctions as i am now looking to buy and Sell Salvage vehicles.

A cat D does Not even need to have a VIC check, Unlike the Cat C.

A 'write off' is a colloquial term for a vehicle which has been declared a total loss by an insurer, either following accident damage or theft. There are some 450,000 accident-related write-offs every year and another 150,000 insurance thefts, many of which are subsequently recovered damaged and re-classified. Many write-offs are legitimately allowed back on the roads following a repair; the safest ones to buy are those which have passed an independent vehicle inspection, such as those on HPI's Condition Inspected register. However, almost half of all write-offs are so badly damaged that qualified insurance inspectors determine that they should never go back on the road. To assist the industry and the used car buyer, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has since 1997 provided the following classification of damage to vehicles that have been deemed an insurance write-off:

o Category A:

Scrap only - this vehicle should be crushed. It should never reappear on the road and there are no economically salvageable parts. It is of value only for scrap metal - e.g. a totally burnt-out vehicle.

o Category B:

The bodyshell should be crushed. The vehicle should never reappear on the road, but it can be broken for spare parts plus any residual scrap metal.

o Category C:

Vehicle extensively damaged and insurer has decided not to repair. May be repaired and put back on the road. Has to pass an inspection costing £36 (2007 price) to be re-registered as damaged repaired.

o Category D:

Vehicle damaged and insurer has decided not to repair. When fixed can be re-registered as damaged repaired.

Think of Cat D like this example:

A car is worth £6,000, but sustains some minor cosmetic damage.

The damage will cost £2,500 for an (inflated price) insurance repair that includes the cost of a courtesy car for the owner while the repair takes place.

But the insurer can sell the car off as it is for £4,000.

So the insurer 'writes it off' as a Cat D, saving itself £500, even though the car may be perfectly drivable and suffers only cosmetic damage.

o Category F:

Vehicle damaged by fire and insurer has decided not to repair. When fixed can be re-registered as damaged repaired.

Check if the car you are looking at is on one of these registers by visiting

Bull****! Nothings 'free' in this world. When my last scoob was crashed into in April 2007 I needed a courtesy car whilst it was being repaired. My insurance company put me in touch with a hire car company who have me a car of similar 'prestige' ie a brand new Passat diesel exec mobile. That certainly wasn't a freebie from the repairers.

I'd stick to estimating mate

Please read the post ref Catagories....makes perfect sense.

Its not about getting it repaired, and anyway even if there is more too it it is still CAT D...thats all...So structurally the car is happy days...

We have three, and the cost of rental is taken into account with the repairs quotes given to the insurer.

My mate bought one of these cat D a while back, repaired it and kept it for himself.

Didnt get any SH, receipts or old MOTs with it and I see this one doesnt mention any of that either.

Or you could have a nice 06 plate Hawkeye STI for the same sort of money, with less miles on it & more power.
