WRX or STI?
Hi all. I'm a noob here :-s Currently have an 04 Honda Civic Type R which I've only had since April 2010 but I once owned a McRae Scoob years ago and I'm wanting a Scoob again so really tempted to take the loss on the chin and trade for a Scoob. I almost bought an 04 WRX PPP from an approved dealer before getting the Type R but when I checked the oil it was mayonnaisey and one of the rear panels looked like it may have had a spray and totally put me off.
Seen 2 I like at a place called Parkway Motor Group nr Mansfield. There is an 03 low miles WRX SL and an 03 STI. Its not much diff on insurance for me but the tax bands are like K and M and I only cover a few thousand miles a year. The difference in price between the 2 cars is £1500 to buy, been offered provisional part-ex on mine of £5750. Mine has covered 54,000 miles and MOT'd until July with FSH and 2 owners prev to myself. I'm wondering if its worth the extra for the sti as the main reason I want a Scoob again is for the lovely boxer rumbling exhaust note. I have been stung before with the McCrae as it had quite a few probs and don't want to buy a 'pig' again as the Type R is reliable. What do you guys think of these 2 cars?:-

i payed around 8k too as i bought it from a dealers then i spent like 1300 on parts to up the power. lovely cars but i really fancy a awd turbo now. as next year im looking for my own place so i might aswel buy my toys now while i can afford it haha

The WRX has very low miles and looks a nice car. One small point it won't have a 2.5 engine unless it's been modded (unlikely I would think).
The STi looks a nice straight car with below average miles and good service history.
For the extra £1500 I would have the STi everyday.
Test drive them both and see what feels right.

heh i part-ex'd my type r 3 weeks ago for a STI hawkeye
admitedly i was looking at a 04 plate originally but my budget kept going out the window
had a 03 plate ep3 with 60k miles, got 5k on a private partex :s
id go for the STI if it was me on the above two, specially if it does have a full history file with lots of bills and reciepts in it

Ask yourself:
Whether the milage really bothers you that much because that may be just about the only major factor.
Whether you will be driving the silver car around, seeing WR blue ones and thinking "Mmmm wish I had a blue one" - and what about the wheel colour?
Will you lust after the blue STi interior with the STi logos and red stitching?
Will you want a bigger spoiler down the line? That will cost you dear..
Will you want to hear that flat-four? The exhaust on the STi will be much more audible over the WRX stock backbox. More money spent to sort out.
Do you want the intercooler water spray? Just a gadget/toy really but still... do you? The STi has it.
Will you want to replace that small scoop on the bonnet with a larger STi one?
Will you want to put fog light covers on for that STi look?
Does a 6-speed STi gear box sound more appealing than a standard 5 speed?
Another toy - the shift light/buzzer.. want one? Get the STi
Basicaly what I'm putting to you is what I would think if I had the choice. May be cheaper on Tax, a once a year cost, but is it worth the saving?

I'd set my limit at 60,000 which the STI is.

The colour and wheel colour doesn't bother me.

Alacantra is harder to keep clean than leather etc so not too bothered about the trim.

Poss would upgrade spoiler later on, seen some online places at reasonable prices.

Quite honestly, I would say STi all the way. You say it wont make a difference now, but when I got my first one, I wanted more and regretted not buying the STi. Happy now with my bug STi.
The BHP, stronger gearbox, better suspension, better interior, better exterior all adds up and is definitely worth the extra cash.

FSH - study the service book and make sure all the stamps are correct and up to date and also double check the Cambelt was done , When I went to view a few that said " FSH" a couple of them had stamps missing ,The 50k service the Cambelt should have been done, make sure as its expensive to change . The 60k service can also be expensive virtually everything needs changing except for Cambelt. Buyers market Ive seen people pay £7k for sti with less than 50k miles.

I'd also suggest that just because a service book shows all the stamps etc, I'd still get a mechanic or enthusiast who knows scoobies to have a good poke around. It's easy for a car to have all the stamps showing that the actual service work has been done, but if additional work has been needed, you'll never know if it's been done or not unless there are bills.

The only thing to be considered in when deciding is cost of insurance IMO, unless you're after softer suspension, worse brakes, weaker gearbox, less power, less potential
(still a good car BTW)
Having owned both an 03 WRX and a 05 STI, STI everytime for me.
I also agree with the overpriced comment above, lot's of 05 STI's around the £9k mark which are slightly better spec'd from the factory than the MY03-MY04 model STI's.
