Default wrx worth tuning?

Hey guys i am new to the site. i Have been thinking about buying a wrx as i cant afford the insurance on a sti. i want to get the car to around 300bhp so its near the same performance as a sti. I would also like to take the car to Santa pod this year. If i get it what sort of times do 300bhp wrx run? its a blobeye 04 wrx. And i hear that the gearbox's can give up if you run 300bhp is this true? help much appreciated guys

wrx's are fine for modding but to get 300bhp + you will have to upgrade the turbo, injectors and intercooler.

a decent decatted exhaust system, panel filter, walbro fuel pump (suggested) and a remap will see you between 270-280bhp on the standard set up

Welcome
Basically by the time you mod your wrx the extra that your insurance co will add will be STI insurance money anyway, so you may as well bite the bullet and look through the insurance section on here to see who can give the best quote on an STI for you

All the above and a nice 16g will give you a cracking 300-320bhp B road blaster.

But too many traffic light pull aways and drag strip starts can shortern your box's life.

Does it say what turbo it has - eh TD05 16g?

Would be good to find out who mapped it to ensure it was someone competent. Front mount not really necessary at that level so I'd have to wonder. Might be fine of course!

I bought an 01 WRX 4 yrs ago and spent enough on it to have warranted buying an STi at the outset, as Tony says.

You're not.

You can get that from a Hybrid TD04, but that is in effect a modded turbo.

Most i got from my td04 with the norm mods was 280/280 before running out of puff. wrx top mount.

320 with a 16g. it was a great car to drive with that turbo set up on the 20ltr. rev'd lovely and pulled well..

If you declare the modifications to your insurer, they will probably charge you more than they would for a standard STi !

As the guys above have said, get the best possible quote for the STi first.

I have spent a fortune tuning my WRX and should have started out with the STi in the first place !

Ignore them all !

If you buy an STI you will still end up moding it, but it'll cost more and be even quicker...

I agree but then the OP will be looking at the more ropey STis or a half decent WRX. I was quoted another £100 for mods up to 400bhp on my WRX which I was well happy with.

looking back on what I have done to my Bug WRX........ the time I had it with a TD05 16G turbo, STi TMIC, STi pink injectors, de-cat, panel filter, Godspeed brakes,Harvey ported headers, Eibach springs, NGK PRF7B plugs.........325 BHP

I never thought it was going to kill me or break something

Get a Classic STI m8 I have had 4 Scoobs now 1 was a 330bhp Ra Lots of fun! Then sold it missed it and then I got a 2002 WRX moded it too around 300bhp mods were 550cc STI Pink Injectors / VF28 / full De Cated system / De cated up pipe Heat wraped the lot! Ecotek Remap! The lad I sold it to RR it at 300bhp 298Ibft But I must say the new age is just to heavy 1400+kgs Now back in a My99 STI v5 and must say it is good to be back in a classic!
You can never make a WRX a STI I have tried! its all the little things that add up to make them a stronger and better car! Like the forged motor!
Plus with all them mods on the car you are looking at most Insurance companies wont touch you on your first scoob! My Insurance on my classic STI is the same as my moded WRX Bug was! All I can say is there are lots of sweet scoobs out there for sale! Go test drive a few and see what is the best for you! for me its Classic STI but I would have a New Age STI they have all the good bits 6speed strong motors that can take 400bhp no probs with a few mods! it is a tuff choice Good luck

Interesting post this, Ive recently bought a uk300 05 shape, have been in contact with some tuners/companies on here, will be hoping to releasing a few extra horses soon. From what ive read you can get the wrx to 320-340bhp before its starts getting tricky which its not that bad at all , but with an 05 sti you'll do that with just a decent full exhaust and remap - does make you think...

Really depends for what power you are looking,if you are looking for around 330-350bhp you will need around £1k(STi pinks £160,STi TMIC and undertray £250,due this you will consider FMIC with good filter £399,VF34 or VF35 £250 upwards and remap OS from £300)..
Brakes will be fine at this power(just upgrade your pads to Bluestuff and new discs),but STi Brembo will be good start.

Just to build on what Jura has said above. I have a bug WRX and decided to buy the bits slow time. My car is being remapped on 12 Feb by Duncan and it will be fitted with the following parts:-
Walbro FP £45 (new on ebay!)
Prodrive sportcat and de-res centre section £120
Prodrive second decat section £40
Afterburner Vortex backbox £120
VF35 £240
STI Pink Injectors £80 (!)
A choice of either a classic up pipe or a japsped catless up pipe (£15 and £25 on ebay)
STI TMIC £150 if I recall
Brand new Forge adj Actuator £60 (ebay!)
PFR7B sparkies £7 each (ebay again!)
3 port boost control solenoid £18 on ebay!

I cant remember if there is anything else, but as you can see the parts are out there to be had, and sometimes at very good prices.

Doesn't sound right to me, you don't need an FMIC at those power levels + there's no way the car could be running 320bhp on standard turbo and injectors.

My WRX has been mapped to 287bhp which is about the upper limit of the standard TD04.
