I,m looking for a hawkeye sti, did the 2.5 engine in these suffer the same problems as the later hatch? The engine problems in the hatch stops me from buying one of these.

MY 07 Spec D has never had an issue. I'm the 2nd owner, but have every peice of history, and indeed it only ever been to the same main dealer for services, and they are the same garage that supllied the car new. I spoke with them.....Nothing aside routine services has ever been done....

Or if you have 25k to spend on a RS then buy a hawk and drop it off to someone ole API and let them forge it stick a bigger blower on it and still have 10k left in the bank, few choices to think about

Age old question pal, why can't Subaru get it right but I am sure it's not all and just some go pop problem is we only remember and focus on the negative.
With your budget you can hold out for the right car so keep on looking and hold out for the right car for you
Best of luck

I looked into this - ie by searching all the threads on here.
Consensus was that all 2.5s are prone to head gasket failure but the 08s on also suffer from more expensive piston problems.
It's disappointing, but I still plan to get a Hawk Sti in the summer.

It just so happens that I am the proud owner of a Blue Hawkeye JDM STI (2.0L) which I have just shipped back to the UK on my return from overseas (RAF based in Cyprus). It has just been registered, IVA'd and MOT'd, 13,000 miles on the clock and was serviced by Subaru in Limassol. Sadly I have to part company with it and would prefer to see it going to a genuine enthusiast rather than a boy racer type.

I thought the problem with the 08/10 hatch was down to engine mapping causing piston failure. I also thought it was pre 2003 cars that suffered from head gasket internal and external leaks. I don't think the hawk in standard trim is prone to anything. I wonder how many of these engine failures are on tuned cars or cars that have had the DIY touch?

Out of interest, is there anyway of telling if the car has had any previous engine problems/repairs if there is no record of it in the service book or any receipts?

As Stevie says though, JDMs are bullet proof.
