The cheapest way is to find a 'friendly' tester. Other than that, then there will be exhausts for sale on here, or try a local breaker. Oh, and a sports cat would be fit and forget so I'd go for that option.

Buy a second hand standard cat from ebay, or if you have a stainless exhaust buy a sport cat from Ebay and leave it on...

If it is an early import it does not require any cats for an MOT.
See this thread.

Otherwise, as said, you will need at least a catted center section. It just so happens that i have a OE center section in the loft that you can have for £25+postage. PM me if your interested.

See this thread.
I had to search for that thread last night, after my car failed its MoT for emissions (and a handbrake that works, but needs to be pulled up too many clicks ....and not forgetting that he also failed the front windscreen washers for not working - no prizes for guessing why, and no, they weren't frozen).

The tester said that the CO reading was excessive at both idle and fast idle, so didn't bother getting a print out from the analyser. When I mentioned that it had no cat, and was an import, he looked at me kind of blank (which wasn't very re-assuring!). I hope I can persuade him to carry out the correct pre-95 non-cat test when I book it in for the retest..........

I thought cats were required after 93 (k)? Not pre 95 or is it different for imports?

Any probs mate just email VOSA and ask them for confirmation . If he is still not understanding to the laws regarding imports, then get him to print an appeal off, and tell him you will contact VOSA and report the VTS and the tester to them. That should clear the waters.
Below is the email i sent to VOSA:

Dear Sir/Madam,
I recently took my 1993 Subaru Impreza Japanese
Import for MOT. I advised the tester that the vehicle required a non-cat
test for the emissions and that an 'exact match' cannot be found in the In
Service Emissions book. However the tester continued to perform a cat test
saying that he could find an 'exact match' which my vehicle failed.

After a discussion with the tester he said he had followed the process and
apparently matched my vehicle with a version 8 Subaru, when actually it is a
version 1.

I made a phone call to your enquiry line and was advised that the vehicle
does indeed require a non-cat test. He agreed that if i can get
confirmation from yourselves that the vehicle does indeed require a
non-cat test then he would retest as such.

Can you please confirm for me the facts re my vehicles emissions check.

Yours faithfully,
??????? .

Vehicle Details:
VRM: B13 BAT
Make: SUBARU
Model: IMPREZA
Varient: WRX
VIN: GC8-??????

The key is 'exact match' mate. And as stated by VOSA the database and publication covers UK vehicles only. So no import is governed by the data and therefore should be tested to different limits. It's all in my thread that i linked above.
