Default MY03 WRX STI

Hi All,

Im currently thinking what car to get. Its a hard choice between a EVO 8 MR or 03 WRX STI PPP.

The maintainence of the EVO is a big problem and the AYC pump failure. Im just trying to gather some info on the WRX STI PPP, is there any known issues with this model, i am aware that the classic suffers from detonation and MAF problems and the 2.5 litre engine has problem also.

I am aware that the JDM model is better but its a bit too expensive.

Any owners out there with any advice

Not many issues, pretty solid cars. The only yhing I'm aware of is knocking rear shocks. Most cars will suffer from this, lots replaced under warranty but not always effective. Can go after-market with no problems, not too expensive.

Decent little cars, just a re-map will see you at 330-350 bhp with nice early spool and MOT friendly.

Good Luck.

i would think that an EVO 8 MR would be a lot more expensive than a 03 WRX STI PPP.

Hi mate ,i've had my 03 sti ppp with a remap and i think its an amazing car , never regretted buying it and it has been worth every penny ,i dont think im ever going to part with it . I was torn between this and an evo 7 at the time but the servicing put me off as well . So glad i bought the sti as i dont think there is much between them as everyday road cars exept the cost .

Thanks for the replys lads.

Just a remap will see her around 330 BHP, will i need to do anything else ?(change MAF...)

The EVO is a nice car but its more expensive and cost a fortune to run.

@handsome rob
Over the 4 yours anything major happened, also what do I need to look out for when viewing, apart from the normal (check exchaust smoke...)

Cheers

Alot of people uprate the fuel pump (though on that model its not necessary) as they are pretty cheap, otherwise a panel filter (no induction kits needed) an your away (maf is ok and you wont need to do anything with it until your well into 400bhp)

Check the condition of the rear struts on the STi. Any Knocking or creaking will be at least a repack but more likely a couple of replacements. Most people will swap them out for coilovers of some sort (BC Racing on mine, but after less than 2 years the NSR is knocking)
If it's a PPP make sure they have the certificate to prove it has been fitted .

If you have the money for an evo though then you should consider a MY05 car as they have quite a few improvements over the earlier cars, and a jdm one would be even better if you can find one.

Probably worth mentioning that an 03 STI will have a 2.0 engine rather than the 2.5....

aren't KYB's the OEM part for the newage scooby anyway? sure i read that somewhere. i have seen these for sale and was deterred from buying them as I assumed being the OEM parts they would just start knocking again pretty soon.
