How should I deal with this...
I had some speedline alloys up for sale, I was contacted and took a 50% deposit via paypal from a guy on here.
I can't say I was particularly impressed even to begin with, trying to change the price after we had agreed it and getting the deposit with akin to blood from a stone.
This was a long time ago now 04/12/10, we agreed he would come up today to pick the alloys up and now he wants a refund...
What would you do in my situation?
I think i'm just going to refund the deposit since it's less hassle and what with it being Christmas an all i'm feeling a little more forgiving, but i'm tempted to get really heavy with him

i am sure its frustrating for you and i guess we dont know why he his situation has changed. i agree, just give the deposit back and forget about it...shame though. i suppose you could re-advertise stating a non-refundable deposit next. hope the sale goes well.

I was under the impression that a depsosit is paid a an agreement to pay the remainder of the cost in exchange for the goods. If the buyer decides they dont want the goods, they loose the deposit.

Quite a few, on here and type-ra.co.uk so I could've sold them to someone genuine by now.
That's how i've always understood it.

Na a deposit is non refundable and i would say no, i put a deposit down on a scooby in scotland 200 miles from me, went up to look at it , I did not want it, due to the description it did now match the car and i had a really bad feeling about it, on my way home i asked if i could have my £200 back and his words were "**** off no refundable"

50% is quite a high deposit - Id probably keep 10% to cover the hassle and refund the rest.
The idea of paying a deposit is to secure the item, if he no longer wants it then thats not your fault.

so if you pay a deposit on a house, then decide you dont want it you can get the deposit back?
a deposit is not just to secure the item, it is an agreement on the purchase of the goods.

Why?
I don't want to name any names, I just want some good advice before I act.

Not in this thread you jackass.
I was trying to be subtle because I haven't decided what i'm doing yet and I don't know why he isn't able to pay for them now, for all I know the poor sod has lost his job...etc.

you started this thread to justify yourself taking money from him.
if your worried he may have lost his job or something give him HIS money back and stop being such a jackass yourself.

It's not even relevant that he is the cause of the problem, I started this thread to see how people have dealt with the same/similar situation.... which is exactly what they've done and i'd like to thank everyone for their relevant input.
Rest assured, if it wasn't Christmas then I would not be refunding him anything.

the buyer can file a dispute and say they were not as described, then get all the money back
i agree with the comment above about keeping the cost of advertising the wheels, but if it goes through paypal u have little chance of keeping any of the deposit
if you do refund the money, make sure u do it thru paypal!

As above, explain to him that you'll give a refund, but you want to keep a certain percentage.
I'm sure he'll be ok about it (as long as you're not keeping a big amount)
