Default Snow Socks Question - or Tyres.

Hi all,

My father In-law is after some ideas on better grip for his car during the winter / Snow periods, the car is FWD.

We have seen many adverts for Snow socks, but as we do not get a constant amount of snow here would this be a good idea or not, I mean can these be used on a roads that snow has been cleared by Grit? Or would a Snow Tyres be more suitable

Many thanks in advance
Rob

I would go for snow tyres but they are expensive.
I have them on the foz at the minute and it handles like a dream not just for traction but it stops well also.

Thats what I thought. He has seen the Snow Socks on his neighbours car, but instantly i thought..... somthing added onto your existing tyre? surely this has negatives such as speed restriction, will quickly wear if used on clear roads or gritted roads, and the hassle of putting the on.

Cheers Bud. He is looking at a cheap solution hence the socks, but we have seen pairs of snow/winter tyres for the front only that are a little over the money of a pair of socks.

So tyres it is then, however lets not close this thread here as I think some guys on here must have tried socks and I would be interested on their opinions

Rob.

PS Im collecting my Car Monday, and my wheels will be here Monday too, and according to the online tracking info they are at Blackburn already. I will give you a bell Monday

snow socks would be ripped to shreds on normal tarmac

they are purely for packed snow/ice conditions and "get you home" scenarios

snow socks would do nothing to combat the fact that your tyre is as hard as old iron with no give in the rubber there for no grip,
a snow tire stays soft and works well in all bad weather situations not just snow,

Snow socks are great - but rip quickly if they are used on a mixed surface (snow/ice/tarmac) from experience. Winter tyres offer a much better experience. I have michellin easy grip snow chains for 'get me home times' - much better than socks. Just my opinion though. BTW look at vredestein quatrac's as a year round tyre - I love vreds me

So you plan to fit Winter tyres on the front axle and Summer tyres on the back axle?

If the back steps even slightly out under braking then you're gonna end up in a hedge or worse. Don't do it!

As Suresh say, winters all round. Some tyres fitters (eg Costco) will only fit 4 winter tyres.

as said, the socks are a good cheap solution to get you out of a pickle but aren't advised for general winter driving, and if you get winter tyres you really must fit all 4, just 2 is asking for trouble big time.
