supose if you find it and report it , i would say after so many months you could claim it , but would that only goes for stuff like clothes and crap , but the car will be registered to someone so the police would be able to trace them , if not the police will stick it on ebay ...lol

i know our local police sell stuff on ebay as they have had a couple of subarus listed before . you have to go to the local station if you want to view anything

You used to be able to apply for a log book at DVLA, they'd write to the current owner to confirm a change, if they don't get a reply, its yours. Apparently.

The v5 shows the registered keeper - the owner could be different.

I'm only going by an old internet tale of a guy that claimed a Sierra Cosworth that was parked on a street for a wile. I heard they give you two weeks to reply, which seems a bit short.

The only way to confirm it would be the DVLA direct.

My mate sold a car a few years back. He refused to hand over the V5 because the buyer was a 'friend' and paid in instalments. When the 'friend' changed his mind about how much he thought the car was worth and refused to pay the balance he requested the V5 from DVLC (as it was back then) and the response period was 28 days.

You are trying to stole(via DVLA)car, because is abandon?

The new V5's state on the front of them that in big bold writing that "THIS DOCUMENT IS NOT PROOF OF OWNERSHIP"

I'll come driving round Durham with me trailer on the look out

You could start by seeing if the car is taxed and insured

Check Tax: http://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/Evl...ehicle+Enquiry

Check Insurance: http://www.askmid.com/

Ok.... I'm In the know here and If you apply for ownership after I think 28 days the vehicle becomes yours my friend. Providing there is no counter claim against the same car. So in theory you can apply via Dvla for ownership and it will become yours after a certain amount of time. I'm unsure what time if honest, it may be months. As already stated a V5 is NOT proof of ownership at all, merely a last owner record. Don't expect a quick reply this time of year either. Lol

The change of V5 confirmation is sent to the address on V5.
Sucks if the V5 address hasn't been changed due to a house move......

OP - you could try a DVLA V888 form, but you'd need a good reason for wanting the owners details for it.

the only time i'd consider this was if someone had dumped a car up at my farm, never off the side of the road and especially if it had only been there a short while, maybe after 6 months you'd think about it.

1. It's under finance and he's legged it...
2. It ain't worth MOT-ing...
3. Stolen and on false plates, so you are then handling stolen goods...
4. If tax'd and tested you can't touch it.
5. I think it is possible to apply for ownership.
