Smile £80k Car Game...

Hi All,

A few days back a few friends and I were discussing what cars we would buy if we had a £80k limit.

The rules were simple;

1. New or Used Cars Only (So, no 2 wheelers or kit cars)

2. £80k will need to buy you a minimum of atleast 3 cars.

3. These cars will need to consist of - 1 family car
- 1 day to day car
- 1 project car
- Any other cars mentioned is just a bonus...

My choices were;

1. Family car - Audi Q7 Quattro S-Line (I love the look of this car and its macho presence it has)

2. Day to day - BMW E60 M5 (M5's have been an all time favourite of mine for many many years)

3. Project Car - Nissan R34 GTR (This is my realistic performance car dream for more years than i can remember)

What would you choose and why?

I'd base it on my present garage which I like a lot:

R35 GTR with tuning to 600 BHP (day to day car AND project, yes it can do both). Used £45k with <10000 miles.
Subaru Legacy 3.0 for winter and comfortable family car/park anywhere. Used £5k with 35000 miles.
Random other car for whatever you need.

The R35 only uses just over half the budget too. Quite a bargain they are lightly used. They don't do family duties well though, 2 doors, little rear space. Like a reverse tardis, but that is probably due to all the chassis strengthening, when you strip back the carpets and look at how the seats sit, it is like they are inside a big set of box sections of chassis. This probably explains the 1740kg weight too, but it is useful weight it seems, but without the expense of lots of exotic materials, there are some alloy panels (bonnet, boot, doors, and some carbon composite stuff, but mainly steel).

In terms of project, the best result on stock turbos/stock engine/stock transmission is a 10.0 quarter mile which is Veyron and superbike rivalling, although obviously not at silly speeds for the Veyron (quicker than most bikes at high speed). Mods: passenger seat removed, rear drag radials, E85 fuel, injectors, pumps, exhaust, intake, tune.

As much as i love the R35, my dream has always been the R34. One day that dream will hopefully come true! ;-)
