The Perils Of 'EVO ENVY'...
Ive joined this site specifically to give some advice to Subaru Owners who may follow from the following symptoms...
Your out and about in your-(for arguments sake)-55 reg Subaru STI,minding your own business when you come to a junction or have to stop at the lights etc. Across the road you see an EVO IX & the Evo driver sees you.He slowly pulls away, the car looks nice & sounds meaty. You KNOW his is a better car than yours & worse HE & everyone else knows it too & he gives you that knowing glance as he drives past.Your Subaru-that you've loved, cleaned & cherished since the day you bought it suddenly feels tame, suddenly doesn't look so good & suddenly doesn't sound right. You glance at the Evo now bombing away in the distance & you look longingly at the Carbon Fibre 'Sonic the Hedgehog' roof vortex generator as it fades into the distance.....
You carry on with your journey but its not the same, you no longer feel 'king of the road' & carnt stop thinking about that rare breed on the highway, the 'EVO'......
.......This is called 'EVO ENVY'...And i got it.....I Got it REAL bad!!!
To cut a VERY LONG STORY short several years ago i received a 5 year driving ban after a conviction in my Escort Cosworth.I'd got a new Mitsubishi Evo VI TME lined up to buy just before my ban so in the end i couldn't buy one.
So i saved & saved & when my ban was almost up i wrote to several Subaru & Mitsubishi dealerships telling them what had happened to me but that i was thinking of buying one of their cars.I Heard nothing from Mitsubishi but a fellow named Stuart Tate from SHOWELLS SUBARU sent me aload of info on the cars they had and the diff specs etc.So a couple of weeks later i arranged to meet him at their showroom in Lye,Stourbridge.Everyone there seemed happy & polite, made me feel real welcome.
My intention was perhaps to buy a Y-reg Sub or Evo but after going through a few payment plans with Stuart at Showells it worked out that i could afford a new 53 reg Blob-Eye STI with free PPP & 18'' Gold OZ Wheels at £24,000.Without making a commitment there & then i went to EXTREME MITSUBISHI on the way home to see what they could offer me.The reception i got was frosty to say the least!!!-it was as if they didn't want to sell me one of their cars.As a friend of mine had bought an Evo VI TME during my ban i was looking at the EVO VII which did look a nice car.
However the lure of the Subaru in WR Blue with the 18'' Gold OZ Wheels fitted was too much & the friendly staff at Showells swayed it for me & a couple of days later the car was my 'Pride & Joy' on the drive!!! The car was brilliant-awesome & i loved it! It was the best car i'd ever had,i loved it! I Will say though that i did lose it once going round an island resulting in two badly bashed wheels which needed refurbing.
After a few services at Showells with no probs whatsoever Stuart offered me a great P/X deal on a new 55 reg 'face-lift' STI Blob-Eye with the new 'Active-Diff' again in WR Blue with free PPP & this time Gold Speedline Turinis. The car was MEGA and i mean MEGA!!! I Thought the 53 reg was good but this one was brilliant in every way! One little quibble though was it was quite easy to get to the cars limits. The back end was a little twitchy when pushed or on damp islands & going into corners fast there was alot of over-steer at the front.
After around 3 years of virtually trouble free motoring (new starter motor, struts & dampers done under warranty at Showells) i got struck down with the dreaded 'EVO ENVY'.........Yes i started to see the odd Evo VIII or IX on the road & got those 'Smug-Snobby' looks off the drivers.Every Time Top-Gear was on TV they were always going on about how good the Evo VIII & Evo IX was compared to the Subaru & the WR1 was literaly destroyed on their test track by an Evo VIII 320 the the Evo VIII 400MR put the £150,000 Lambo to shame.
So here i was looking to change my car.The Hawk-Eye STI looked ok but the interior was exactly the same as my previous two. Then the horrible new hatchback came out which made my mind up,it was going to be an Evo for me next.....
So last year-November,i sold my beloved 55 reg STI to the first person that came to see it and a few days after that i bought a 57 reg EVO IX FQ 360 from a Mitsubishi dealership 100 miles away from me in Weston-Super-Mare.Again,long story short,my experiences with them was pathetic,i'd give them 4/10 at best as it has been since with Mitsubishi Acorn in Birmingham, pathetic!
The car its self...Well compared to the Subaru it needs alot more TLC.It has to be run on 99 ron Shell V-Power which is a pain if you dont live near a Shell garage. The seats are very uncomfortable-im only slim but the seats are so tight they squeezed my knackers upto my belly button!!! Having said that they are half leather which Subarus arnt but the interior colour is bland grey compared to the blue & pink of the STIs. I Always loved the looks of the Subaru & i still think it looks mega from all angles. The Evo looks great from the back & the front but looks naff side on.The Evo has a very handy rear wiper which type UK Subarus dont & again handy folding wing mirrors which Subs dont.
Performance wise 0-62mph on paper the Evo is 3.9seconds although it dosent feel like it.It certainly bites quicker with NO Turbo lag than the Sub & is more explosive from standing start but the STI's felt much quicker on acceleration through 4th,5th & 6th.So speed wise it dosent seem like theres much in it although the Evo certainly uses loads more petrol than the Sub.
Where the Evo is better-& i mean it ABLITERATES the Subarus is the handling, its is AWESOME!!! You will not believe how fast you can go into and out of bends, corners & islands!!! With the right tyres on nothing-& i mean nothing can touch it.Ive got semi-slick Yokohama A048s on 18'' Speedline Super Turinis(the first thing i changed) & dry or wet the car dosent move! Ive never once felt the car twitch or slide & the front end 'bite' is breathtaking. This is the second set of Yoko A048s & the first went all through last years severe winter with no problems thanks to the brilliant ACD & SAYC on the Evo.
However im now looking at almost £2,000 for a new clutch & flywheel as mines slipping,6 months road tax at £225 and a service every 6 months at £400+.Ive already had to change the front brake discs & refurb the Brembo callipers. But worst is the really annoying squeaks, rattles & noises coming from inside the car which come & go depending whether anyone has been sitting in the passenger seat or not!!! Add to that the other SNOBY Evo owners & dealers you could say me experiences arnt great!!!
So here i am,just over a year down the line after succumbing to 'EVO ENVY'.The handling of the Evo is awesome plus you very rarely see another Evo on the road but as a day-to-day car its not half as satisfying as my old 55 reg STI. You've got to thrash the Evo to get the best out of it & if you do you'll always be astonished at what it can do but the Subaru is a much better 'all round car'. I Miss my old SUB STI like i miss an ex,fit, good in bed girlfriend. My new girlfriend is just as fit & just as dirty but not the same....
So if ever you get a touch of ''EVO ENVY'' just think on,the grass isnt always greener on the other side,it just looks it...

ive come the other way, i had a tommi mak in red, looked the dogs and they are reliable but yes alot of evo owners are tossers, i hated the attitudes on mlr especially, i like all rally spec cars,,, always have whether its a pulsar, quattro, mk2, delta, ooohhhh deltas love deltas.
but there not perfect the ayc is tricky, you never really know what its going to do when it breaks traction do i opp lock or not.
so i sold it for lots of money and bought a sti ra v4 and have to say i love it even though yes i have had problems mainly due to dodgy dealers and my own too trusting attitude. but the standard ra feels as quick as the remapped tommi mak and the handling is just as good but you know where you stand when it loses traction, alot more fun to drive and a third of the price, nearly forgot oohhh that noise

You got a five year driving ban? What did u do to get that? Your obviously a **** on the roads to the highest extreme to get banned for that long, dont tell me - every other forum, even the evo ones, dont like you so you had to try and come on here instead? You gotta have done something pretty shameful to get banned for that long.
Tell us more about your 5 year ban mate....
Also, thats a seriously long post - so long i couldnt be arsed to read most of it, you should really consider how short life is and that there is better things to do with you time (well, maybe for us there is anyway)

Im not going to go down the offensive route, but your first ever post on scoobynet and you copy and paste something that was pre-written from a word document without saying who you are and welcome etc......
The only Envy I have is the fact that you are earning far to much money to swapping through cars like you did/doing, which I find rather suspicious, and im not saying "that EVO's are renowned to belong to drug dealers" (Jermery Clarksons words), but how can you afford to swap through cars like you do? GTR in 2011?

PS you sentencing and ban says there is more to it in my opinion ;(

I thought it was quite good tbh, will say that you have never seen how good the evo is on the track/airfield against a scoob though as I had my old spec c v an evo IX 320 for evo mag greece back in 2005, and lets say the better handling car wasnt the evo
Never been envious of evo's, nice cars though, just too many drivers aids on the standard car, would have to be an RS if your going that way, no SAYC etc, and yes those recaro seats are tight (and the latest subaru's do have half leather seats on some models )
Shame you never drove a twin scroll model subaru, puts evo's to shame
