Thinking of getting a uk turbo ... Thoughts pkease
Ok looking at scooby 1998 wagon uk version. Basic standard apart from dump valve. What should I look for as my last turbo was a jap and t guy I bought if had plenty if paper work and I known t car for years before I bought it.
I miss t turbo power but love t look of my bugeye wagon (shame it's a gx) and know I can sell mine and buy t turbo and have cash left over for some tweaks
Cheers

Your post's not very clear. Are you looking at a 98 turbo wagon that you have in mind or are you generally looking for a wagon of that vintage? And what's with the dump valve, you'd do better to hook up a microphone in the seat connected to a speaker in the grille and learn to fart in time with each gear-shift.

Check the basics - knocking when warm, clutch slipping on boost (5th gear, 3k and floor it), make sure all the gears engage smoothly and that there is no whining coming from the rear, smoke on boost etc... Id also want history of the cambelt and clutch being done. Check and double check for accident damage, misaligned panels or paint over spray (my friend found out the hard way when he removed the front bumper to fit a FMIC).
Oh, and if you do get it, bin the dump valve and stick the std one back on
If you can stretch to it, id be looking for a jdm import myself, more power and more toys.

Ok lets start at the beginning.
Once upon a time, Subaru made some MY98 uk cars and put 380cc injectors in them and an unmappable ecu, also only 208bhp, this of course caused some problems to anyone who wanted to tune these cars safely as you had to replace the ecu at great expense, and the gearboxes sucked as they were the last of the TY752's which were pretty weak.
Subaru then made an MY99 uk turbo, these were more powerful out of the box than the MY98 uk car, boasting a whopping 215bhp, 7 more than the previous version, and they had in their wisdom an idea to strengthen the gearbox! bravo we all said and now we have TY754 boxes in our cars
They also put in bigger injectors, added better suspension and brakes (2 pots on the MY98, 4 pots on the MY99) and gave us a mappable ecu! Ok they put some crappy MAF sensor in there so it doesnt like Induction kits or oily panel filters, but hey, all the rest was a vast improvement, including the phase 2 engine
