It is indeed a joke. However it is great to see an article advocating the use and pointing out the added safety of running winter tyres in the UK in the colder months when the average temperatures drop below 7°c. Hopefully more people will wake up to this (including the insurance companies who will hopefully be compelled to educate their moron staff who have been increasing premiums) and fit winter tyres int the winter. With a bit of luck, next year so many people will be on winter tyres that this sort of weather won't lead to insane levels of traffic jams due to stranded and abandoned vehicles.

I informed my insurers (highway through Chris Knott) that I fit winter tyres to my car in the winter. It's added on my policy and didn't cost any extra (their call centre is based in the UK)
