I want to run out of petrol...

Hi got my blobeye STI last week and I want to find out how much a full tank is gonna cost me! It's almost on the last line now... I'm waiting for the light to pop up and tell me I'm running out, was just wondering when it comes on? My brother has a classic and swears down he doesn't have a low petrol light, I hope mine's not the same, or... I shall just stop lol.

My daily drive to work is only 3 miles away so there's no problem of me running out as long as that light does activate!

Yea it does have the light, but you shouldn't really be running it on low fuel!!!

most tunners recommend fill up at a quarter tank. As anything under a half tank while driving with some passion can lead to fuel cut. iv had it at knockhill coming out hairpin with 3/4 of a tank.

Is it bad for the car? To be honest I only really want to do it the once, just to see how much a full tank works out at! Does it come on when the needle hits below the low line then?

Why dont you just fill the tank and see how many mile you can do till it's half full and then double it...I know it's not exact but it'll give you an idea.

its not good for it plus you drag any crap up to the filter going so low.

why does it matter anyway. sure the tank is 55L so just work out how much it is for bout 50 L as once the comes on thats prob bout whats left.

I've been told by someone who knows these things quite well that its a really bad idea to run a (classic this was) impreza low on fuel - past 1/4 tank.

Very true!

It also depends massively on how you drive.
If you drive it like you stole it = 60/4.545 x 15 (mpg) = 198 miles
If you are careful = 60/4.545 x 25 (mpg) = 330 miles

But, that is the maximum out of the tank. Light will come on with about 1-2 gallons left in the tank. (30 - 50 miles less than quoted figures)

Now you don't have to run it into the red.

if theres any crap in the tank it will sink to the bottom where the pick up is, so running low makes so difference regards bits in the tank, plus the pump has the filter/sock on it anyway

I often play this game
On my 04 WRX I used to get 245 miles from the pump cutting out on fill up until the light came on. In my Hawk Sti is seems to vary from 215 to about 230 so far (only done it three times though).
The most I ever got in my WRX was 310 miles (motorway driving). The short journeys won't do you any favours.

I always thought this was a bit of an urban legend for the same reason, plus any crap sitting at the bottom surely gets stirred about in the tank when your driving? All that fuel sloshing around when you corner?

exactly bit like the other urban myth of rolling road transmission losses being measured on percentage's, quite how you loose more power just because you have more i dont know lol

Completely pointless, as you'll have to repeat the test every time fuel goes up in price if you want to know exactly.

your tank is a 60L tank, light comes on and there is approx 10 - 12L left in the tank

lol ive spent too much time looking into it at work (not busy lol) and yes the loss will vary with speed/resistance etc etc but will only reach x amount of loss but the power is also increasing with the resistance, and there are fixed losses too! basically no true way of calculating it. but using a fixed bhp loss is more accurate i believe, other wise all the big powered cars would be loosing serious power and wouldnt be any quicker than a less powered car- making tuning a waste of time, so it would be more benefit making the losses less

I've just been reading up on it. Very interesting and painful on the brain at the same time. It seems the best thing is to compare wheel horse power, which always seemed logical to me anyway.

ha ha yeah very painful on the brain, but yes the wheel power is the only thing we can generally rely on- assuming the rr get it right, seems many f them dont know how do do a scoob properly with the air-flo, loading and gear etc etc. i think 50 bhp is a pretty rough guide as to losses

oh and i once had 50 carefull miles once the light came on, did get a minor hesitation up hill just before the petrol station though lol

I had that when I picked up my car, not my current one but the one before which was a GT-B Limited. The guy I bought it off left it was not a lot of fuel in and I couldn't find a shell station near his house. I thought Oh I'll stop at the next one I pass, went along the M25 I think it was and didn't see one for aaaaages. Looked for a shell on POI on the tomtom, drove to it and there was nothing there. at that point the fuel light had been on for a while and I was starting to get worried. I think I ended up pulling into a BP station with it stuttering like buggery, was a very close one. Filled up with BP ultimate - never again.

That's what my brother has... and he swears it doesn't.

This thread has turned out to be quite interesting in the end

Anyway, I didn't have a choice in the end after making this thread I left work and the light came on! Cost me £59 to fill up.

If you do a search there will be a post from me when i was **** enough to have done this. IIRC I got 50 miles out of my 03 WRX once the light came on and I did run out, stall, and my car was left sat on a hill near some traffic lights whilst I had to walk to the bloody petrol station! At the time I was regularly driving 30 miles with the light on anyway before I was filling up. Now I don't do that anymore and fill up around the 1/4 tank mark. The only good thing to come out of it is I know the limit BUT, BUT it does not matter! LOL, I can get 30 miles anyway with the light on which is plenty of time to find any petrol station.
My advice is this, stop thinking like a **** and fill the bugger up!
