Matt - its the same with bikes. What do most people do with their R1 three months after purchase? Exhaust and air filter. why? better midrange. When you first snap open the throttle on an R1 you will scare the living **** out of yourself. After a couple of months you will want something quicker.

OK this is kind of inspired by the Top Gear disposable motoring piece last night.

If you didn’t see it, they had bought a piece of **** VW Polo for £75 and were saying that you could drive it around until it broke down and it made more sense than buying a newer decent car for town journeys,

Now call me a snob if you want but I wouldn’t be seen dead in a car like that if I had a choice, I’ve had my fare share of “Minging Motors” and will not be going back there. Christ I won’t even drive my wife’s S reg 206 if I can help it.

Mutant_Matt on the other hand has a MY00 DBM with some lovely 6 spoke Speedline wheels but chooses to drive around in an E Reg grey Suzuki Alto 3 cylinder 850cc. I think this is STRANGE and have told him so many a time.

Is Matt’s behaviour normal? Do the rest of you drive round in “Minging Motors” and only bring the Scooby out when your feeling sassy? Or is Matt a complete nutter.

Mike

I was considering a job that involved taking the train across to Manchester every day. I would not be leaving the Scooby in a city centre car park all day and was seriously considering a 50 quid mini or something like that for most days...

It made a lot of sense to me. The cost of replacing the car is less than the cost for dentmasters to get rid of a small dink in the door, and a lot less than someone keying the car out of jealousy.

Thanks for that Mike!!

If you live in London, what's the point taking your Scooby 10 mins up the road (it not even getting properly warmed up), sitting in a jam on the way, parking in Tescos where some to$$er will either bump into it or muller thier doors into it and damage it? You don't get a chance to use any of your Scoob's performance, you guzzle expensive petrol in the process, you worry about some **** damaging it whilst it's in the car park and generally have no fun driving it in a jam anyway.

Now I love the Alto 'cos it costs nothing to maintain, does between 40-60mpg on NUL, don't give a crap about it getting damaged or even nicked and who cares if I'm killing it driving round town, hardly ever getting it warmed up properly? I don't

Keep the Scoob for when you can use it and actually have some fun....besides, it's not like I use the Alto when the Scoob would be better is it?

Matt.

P.S. It's a 770cc Mike, not the whopping 850cc that you mentioned

Maybe I need to qualify this a bit more.

I mean driving for pleasure not work. I wouldn't drive my car to work every day but come the evening if I need to go somewhere out comes the Scooby.

Cool

I don't even like driving my car when it is dirty never mind using a cheap run-about.

Mind you I appear to be in the minority amongst the people I know, who cannot understand why I have the Impreza at all with the running costs.

I thought about buying something sensible on petrol and insurances to use for the high miles to and from work...
but I know I would just leave it on the drive and take the Scooby everyday, so haven't bothered...

This ties in with my own thoughts. How many people use their cars for everyday use (commutes, shopping, etc like myself), and how many only bring it out at the weekend (oo er misses) for a fair weather blast??

I'll take the Scoob for anything that's not a local trip - regardless of what the weather is doing of time of day/day of week.

Besides, driving a "minger" as Mike puts it, in the kind of cases I've mentioned shows you're a)not a snob b)not some vain **** who worries about image and c)got some kind of grip on reality when it comes to finances...

Matt.

P.S. If I didn't live in London, the "minger" may never get a lookin again...

Believe me, if you live in London, you DONT want to drive your pride everywhere.

I got sick of the dings my car kept getting, so I bought a £500 banger for the crap journeys and I now park my evo in a secret place and take the civic home with me.

Best thing I ever did.

Morning all,

Some of us don't give a rat's *** about the cost. I drive the Scooby come rain or shine, in all weathers and even nipping upto Asda's. I haven't really any other choice, as I have to commute 40 miles to work and back (on the motorway) and I am not doing that in my Wife's 1.2 Punto or on the back of some scraggy scooter. And I don't see the point in owning a fantastic car and leaving it in the garage. For example, one of my best pals bought one of the limited edition Lotus 340R's. It has no roof, no boot, no radio etc Cost him £35,000 and it sits in his garage. He won't go out in the wet, mud, etc etc. So in 9 months he has owned the car he has done 700 miles. What a ****ing waste of money... Could have bought himself a Ferrari for that money!

So there we go. I also have had my time with ****e cars...Austin Allegro, Maestro, Peugeot 305 GT (old boxy thing!) Metro GTi, Tigra, Vectra, Lexus and now Scooby.

No way is it sitting in a garage gathering dust.

Oh, and I am lucky as the company pays for my fuel and insurance!! Whoo Hoo!!

Yes - 'cos it's only just outside the M25 and it usually involves sitting in 30 - 45 mins of traffic jam to get there (and it's only 10 miles of dual carrigeways away )

I drive a 88 vintage Orion Ghia, the my00 scooby at weekends, it does have something to do with the fact I work in Lewisham were the Scooby would last 2mins. Its also so nice to be able to not give a crap about the car !

Big M aka the weapons master aka Henry the VIII, Matt, BD Arrrbbbooooo

Good cheeky little thread this, as you guys know I thoroughly agree with Matt and all the others who have a minging motor.

I have one , a rover 620ti chipped induction kit, dump valve,Omp Makinen steering wheel, Konis and colour coded wheels. he he he he scares the de be-Jesus out BM drivers and pedastrians as they get an all mighty PPPppppppcccccchhhhhhttttttiiiissssssssssssss as I drive by he he he.

Completely agree minging motors are a must in town, I have already had a nick on the front of the Rover and a tweak at the back and I don't give a monkeys.

But if that were my RA, I would want blood

My fiances father and i shared a d reg micra "colette" it was a rust bucket. I used it to and from work and so did he...

i once pulled out to pass a 1 litre punto on the way to work it was a 55 model and she looked across at me and put the foot down and held me out

please note i drive a 900 kilo car with 195 at the wheels making about 215 at the wheels per tonne. IE alot more than most cars. The fiances father rides a gsxr1100 motorbike... so basically its so funny when we drive something that makes 60 mph seem REALLY quick

i just laugh at people that look at it, safe in the knowledge i have a total weapon at home that makes whatever they are driving seem rubbish

i suppose its like lennox lewis looking at someone in a pub and them saying "ill have u!" he just laughs and turns around, he doesnt fight everyone! and doesnt feel small, cos he knows he could win

Yeah - and I had great fun last night racing a Ford Escort van (Diesel ) up the North Circular - I didn't even break the speed limit but it made me laugh!!!

We both *really* had to try to keep up with each other : LOL

If that had been the Scoob, it would never have happened (you wouldn't even THINK about racing a Diesel Escort Van now would you ). Different types of fun can be had in mingers for sure

I currently use my girlfriends FIAT 126 for travelling down roads covered in mud & gravel. I actually think it's a good laugh being able to drive something flat out and not break the speed limit.

Weekends for Scooby, fiat for those week days

I have to take the Scoob for everything which is why it's a wagon.. makes a useful van / mutt carrier etc, etc... however when my (American) wife decides she's going to brave the UK's roads, we'll get some old auto Polo or something like that to do the Tesco / city centre runs in (I can see the insurance quote for the Scoob otherwise... 25 year old, no UK experience, foreign license, doesn't like manual gearbox!!!).

No, I won't be putting gold alloys on it and lowering the suspension :-)

Matt - I've got a minger for most of the same reasons you do. There is also one other major plus point. Once you have had you scoob for 2-3 months you get used to the performance. You buy some bits. Get used to the new performance, buy some more bits etc etc. Eventually you will run out of bits to buy. If you spend 2 weeks driving something that won't go over 60 you can scare the cr4p out of yourself when you get back in the scoob

That's why every Scoob owner should have a bike - loads more performance than the Scoob for comparatively sod all money - loads of fun
