Default choices,choices wr1 or 06 sti?

in a few months im looking to buy a car, ive been reading up on all the specs etc and have narrowed it down to a wr1 or an 06 2.5 sti(std or ppp)with a 10-12k budget. ive looked at the jdms but havent seen that many, especially the spec c most are out of my price range.

+,s for the wr1: one off special eddition, lower tax(although u dont buy an impreza to be ecconomical or cheap to run and insure). looks better than a standard 04 sti(imo).has dccd.special edditions are usually bought by enthusiasts so they tend to be well cared for and lower mileage, although i know this isnt always the case.

+,s for the 06 sti: 2.5ltr torquer engine.improved dccd control.more robust chassis?
better looks than previous models, again my opinion.general improvements over older models , interior etc.two years newer than a wr1

all i want to know is,are the improvements to the 06 sti, like better dccd control , steering ,wider track and tougher suspension, carbon synchros on 4th 5th nd 6th etc etc make it a better car performance and drivabilty wise than the wr1.
and has anyone owned both of these and what their verdict is.tuning wise
i would only be making slight mods to either car, id be looking to take it to 350bhp350ft approx . so uprated pump ,remap etc.id run a sports cat to be road legal.

any input appreciated.

Not owned a WR1, do own an 06STi remapped to 350bhp. Have a mate with an 04STI PPP, so similar power etc to a WR1. They are both very different to drive. The WR1 still has that push in the back at 4000rpm from the 2.0. The 2.5 in the STI offers so much torque its incredible. Personally, and this is only my view, I had the same choice as you and went for the STI, and I dont regret it. Its easily tunable to 350+ and I love the looks of the Hawkeye. I dont think you would be dissapointed with either. My advice is to drive eboth and see what you think.

my05 jdm sti was my choice, plg road tax, no more to insure than a uk car and the best engine, at no time did I consider a uk car just took a while to find one, was easily within the budget you have quoted,

well il keep that in mind.i know the jdm is easily tunable and better spec,d than a uk car. however im worried about the history of an import , can u tell if they been in accidents etc? and what about service history? ive never bought an import, maybe im being over cautious?

I had a WR1, B7 RS4 and an RB320 i miss the WR1 more!!! its got a stronger pistons than the RB320, i had it mapped to 360 and loved every minute of it, never missed a beat even sitting at 160mph on the german autobahn!!!! only thing to look out for are the rear shocks they start to knock and its expensive to fix better to find one with upgraded items!!!

yeah i read about the shock issues, best to get some coilovers or as u say one thats done already.the wr1 just seems to tick quite a few boxes for me personally, thats why im considering it against the 06.

personally i think the hawk looks better, but if you want a bit of an investment sort of thing wr1 wins. the fact its a limited no always holds a higher price tag

I was a member on the WR1co and these guys have cars up to 400bhp with out any major issues, I remember reading a quote from a guy that worked a subaru that the RB320 is only really good for 360bhp max before thinks start going pearshaped due to the lack of forged pistons!!! i agree the hawkeye is the best looking imprezza and if ur not into tunning i would go for one the RB320 is an awasome car as are the 06 sti's but and its a big but we all get used to the standard power and want more, the WR1 will allow u to do this at a cheaper cost. IMO.

Personally i've never taken to the WR1, I really don't like the colour and think the stickers look cheap, the only thing I like about it is the black interior. I'd get a newer Hawk, the best looking Impreza imo.

^ spot on I have got an 07 sti and i haven't driven a wr1 but... I have owned an 04 sti for 3 years and a 55 briefly, about 6 weeks, long story... The 04 was quite raw and torque steered a bit, the 55 was great with the dccd and I liked the handling. I have just had my 07 mapped by Duncan and I can honestly say it's one of the best cars I have driven, admittedly I love scooby's. That's my 10pence worth

if i bought a wr1, i wouldn't tune it as it is a special edition, however that is me, wr1 will have stronger engine, but if you want 350 then the hawk is the one to go for, more torque, and good looking.

WR1 for me, I love the WR1 and they still look amazing. I had a classic painted in WR1 blue with the wheels, brakes etc and it looked awesome so I'd have the real deal in a heartbeat

Thats another good point. I didn't want to tune a limited edition. I looked at the RB at the same time i bought my 06 STI (they were both new at the time), but I knew I would want more power than the PPP offered, so saved £5000 (difference between the 2 at the time), bought the STI and then spent a bit getting it where I wanted it.

I replaced my WR1 with an extensively modified 06 STI running in excess of 450 bhp about 18 months ago.

I still miss the WR1 ..........

i dont think id like to mod the wr1, just remap it, heard it makes a big difference to the drive etc. the 06 sti tho, i might have a little dabble with that. i think it will come down to whats available at the time. as stated, id like a 350bhp car, although id be more interested in the torque figures. i think both cars should reach figure without putting too much stress on the internals.

My mate as a WRX Hawk in the same colour as a WR1, the colour is not that special any more.

2.0l JDM STi would be my shout.
