hi got a 53 plate wrx..full subaru history.been too work today .all is well.popped down shop and when reversed it sounded like cars do normaly in reverse but then the whining got louder as you got quicker ?? any ideas?

assuming you're being serious,
the reverse gears are straight cut, and straight cut gears whine.

 

yes mate...the whine i do get..it just seemed really pronouced and louder today.wondererd if it was diff or gearbox related

 

I have never seen inside an impreza's box but the reason for it on other boxes is beacause the rear gear has no synchro.

 

Youtube - sounds from inside a touring car. All the gears are stright cut.

 

thanks just seems bit odd.had car over a year and you notice difference in sounds etc

 

It's cos when your goin forward da sound is left behind, reversing your moving towards the sound so it'll be louder innit

took too subaru and they said not too worry.thing is it sounds differnt too the other day.it defiantly sound s louder when you reverse and alos i noticed when you drop to 2nd from 3rd the whine seems louder too..checked diff oil and it level.the car had full 60 service done at subaru in april so surley the gearbox oil etc isnt low @@@???

 

lack of synchro would be the crunching, whining is the straight cut gears as said...

 

is there any reason why it would sound louder than the day before tho.was pretty quiet when left work then all sudden when reversed on snow down at shops it very loud and has been since

 

mine whines, even when i go forward. I tell the miserable cow to shut up and that usually sorts it out

 

have you checked the gearbox oil level?
