What are they on?
A Saxo VTS and a Lupo GTi beeting a Puma!!
Autocar, Car and EVO all rate the Puma as one of the finest handling cars around under £20k.
The drag strip test was always going to be a looser for the Puma due to a torque limiter on first gear, but in gear acceleration is great due to the engine coming alive at 4000rpm.
And as for asking the Max Power boys which was most desirable.....
Sorry rant over.

According to their survey and testing, the Saxo should have won!! At least that's what my girlfriend thought.
As the first test started, I told her the Lupo would win, as the tests normally seem fixed!!!
They marked down the Saxo due to driving postion, and it's normally the first upgrade with the Max Power Crew!! Surely it's one of the last upgrades, as it's normally expensive and not necessary!! Oh well!!
Also the Max Power crew are normally secondhand buyers and not new!! I don't see many 17 year olds with £13k to spend on a new car!!
I'm not looking down my nose at Max Power guys, as I started there!! But my first couple of cars cost me £3k, and that was a lot of money then!!!
I wonder which car, people like us would have voted for if we had to choose on appearance??? Personally I would have picked the Puma!! I must be old!!!

Yep, you have got to love their driven 100, at no point does it take into account whether or not the car is any fun to drive. As for the quarter mile runs, Mike just could not get the cars off the line, so hardly a fair comparison.
Most desireable, the VTS? I used to own a VTR, and admit I did like the way it looked, however with the different wheels, and the MY01 style headlights that style of VTS could hardly be called desireable.
Well a Wednesday, is not really a Wednesday without complaining about Driven anyway

Is it just me or does the team on Driven seem to be suspiciously enthusiastic about VW's?
Doesn't VW sponsor Sport on 4?
Conspiracy theory or am I being paranoid ;-)

As a Puma Millenium owner (which I rae better than my previous cars, Corrado 16v, Integra Typre R, 205 1.9 GTi, etc) I must agree with the first lads thread!
THe Puma is so good it is sometime unbelievable, yeah sometimes it annoys me cos 1st gear is cack, but in gear acceleration always puts a smile on my face, it blast though corners and is ultimately thrashable!
I liken it to my Dads 98MY sometimes for fun.

Driven 100 ? More like "Plug new model 100".
Every time they have a driven 100 there is always 2 older models and one new model. 99 times out of a 100 the new model wins, I wonder why ?

I wonder what Driven would put a Scoob up against.
A Land Rover Defender - well they're both 4x4 with turbos.
A Honda Insight - err.. both Japanese
Oh and an EVO VII - it's new on the market.
Steve (Still bitter)

I think both Andy Tang and myself are both developing psychic powers - exactly the same scenario. I was sat down with my girlfriend watching Driven last night - and I also picked the winner before they had said a word.
Trouble is, this is the third week in a row that I've done it!
Watching the "allocation" of figures would also show Gordon Brown a thing or two in manipulating a result....
Why oh why do I watch it?
Thanks
Gavin

For me the best car won. Looks loads better than the other two.
Ive got a Polo GTI at home, which is quite good fun.
At least for Puma owners none of the Max Power brigade aspired to own one. Maybe it because most of the time women drive them. No street cred = less chance of it being nicked.
Time marches on and the Puma is a has been sorry Puma lovers. Long live the Lupo.

My 'better' half has a Puma 1.7 and i like it!
Looks great, handling is brilliant for FWD decent power and brakes and it does 40mpg.
Personally i do not mind finding her Puma parked behind my Scoob on the drive, gives me a good excuse to drive it!
Personally - the Max Power brigade finding it undersirable is a bonus!

There seemed to be a big emphasis on the Puma being based on the humble Fiesta, well I've got a Fiesta and it's one the best handling cars I've driven and working in the motor trade I've driven a few! I've had a breif drive in a Puma and it seemed much like the Fiesta except quicker!
I see Drivel is now a comedy with lines such as insurance companys run at a loss, yeah right and monkeys might fly outta my butt!

Ive got a Lupo 16V (100BHP)and its a cracker and soon to get cheaper road tax too!! Plenty of headroom for us over 6 footers even with the optional sunroof and its got ABS for the wife and heated washer jets for those cold mornings and and ...............
But the best reason is it stops the wife driving the Scoobie!!!

The Puma is the most fun car I have ever owned and the list is long, it does everything you want and more. I sold y Puma to get the Impreza because I needed a larger car for work and it's the sadist thing I have ever done. The only reason for getting an Impreza was to have the same sort of fun in a bigger car, yes the Impreza is V quick but the Puma was more fun to drive and was by far the best car out of the 3 on driven.

BOB.T,
please sign up for the real world
ins cos are making massive losses, I work in one and its true.
Despite massive job cuts in the industry to reduce costs, its still not profitable.

Puma - girls car - I don't think so!
I'm not a hairdresser either, I think people who havent, should drive one, then they'll understand. It is quite a long time since VW made a real drivers car, and I had one of them too - Corrado.
I'll be getting a my01 later this year for the same reasons as above. And yes I do personally rate the Puma over the Type R, or I wouldn't have swapped them would I?
The Type R promissed a lot but gave little in return, yes it was ultimately the faster car, but you couldn't ring the neck of it like you can a scoob or puma, as it seemed to just not want to play rough. - Good track car though.

I had a Puma for a week and thought it was pants. Where was the power?
Even the Racing Puma has been criticised for having a distinct lack of power. On top of that the two rear seats were useless for adults (lack of headroom), the trim quality was crud and it's a FORD!!
There are better cars out there, especially from the east which have more power, better handling and better reliability e.g. Colt Cyborg, Honda Civic Vti, even the "ugly" Nissan Almera.

Whats all this!!! Driven is crap, they're full of it - totally agree with all the comments made. Except about the Puma. OK it may be ok but its not the best handling or best drivers car I've ever seen. The escort cossie was a cracker, I've driven two pugs which are renouned for the handling (306gti6 and 205 1.9gti) and I've just bought an MY99 scooby and its more of a drivers car than any of them, who cares about MPG, you wouldn't buy a high performance car if you did .
I'm not saying the Puma is crap but its not the dogs either!!!

Personally i wouldnt go and buy any of the 3 cars they test drove ,Puma - too slow, Saxo - well its a Citroen, Lupo - prob the best in the bunch all round but just dont like the style of it!
My opinions of course, each to their own!

Mates got a Puma and they're a hairdresser.
Thing is they're a he.
I've been in it a few times and I like it. Handles well and looks good. In gear acceleration is very good and was quite a surprise to me. Personally I would have one any day over a Lupo, as they look too cute to me.
Mum works for Ford so is able to get them at a discount. May be replacing her car with one.
