I have replaced my 15" alloys with some 17". Just phoned the Privilege and they have asked for £170 extra
Is this usual or am I just unlucky with my age (21) and a few engine mods I have done?

Thats usual with Privillege (lack there of).

My advice, check out some different insurers such as Greenlight...

Also it took Privillege 3 months to process a claim with me FYI.

It was after changing my alloys whilst insured with Privillege that I decided to change the whole car, as an Impreza + PPP + new alloys was more expensive to insure than a P1... go figure!

Rgds, Alex

PS. and if you are thinking of changing insurer mid-policy, don't unless you wanna pay a 5% (can't remember exact cost) of the value of the whole policy, as a cancelation charge... Privillege

I got charged an extra £50 for the (at the time) remaining 6 months, that was going from 16" to 17", despite the fact the wheels would be cheaper to replace than the actual Subaru items, and that all nuts were locking wheel nuts

Robertio,

ALL locking wheel nuts? I'm sure I heard somewhere that its a bit dangerous to do that..or am I mistaken?

Sgoud,

Had exactly the same problem with Privilege, but the increase was £50 rather than £170 !
Either way it's a rip-off and don't forget to check your excess coz they increased that by £100 on my policy without telling me prior !!
They are gonna lose a lot of business - do all insurers take this attitude ?

I was quoted £60 extra to go from 16" to 17" wheels with privilege, even though I had recently had a quote to insure an RB5 for the same cost as my current standard UK MY99

Go figure, and to make matters worse they take a months premium as an admin charge if you cancel the policy early to go to another insurer!!!!

And I forgot to mention that I have already worn a 5% increase in premium for my ScoobySport backbox

Andrew.
MY99 + SS backbox.

Sgould,

I'm 22 and with Privelege, and went from 15 to 17 for the same price. Full Magnex was £90. In some ways we are fortunate though, as there are many companies who run a mile when you mention mods!!

Cant be to do with the area though!

Just another point, what did you value them at? They have price bands up to £1000, over £1000 etc.

Mark.

Just got some P1 wheels, for which the insurer did not charge any extra, as they are "subaru OE equipment and only 1" bigger than standard".

Zenith wanted £114 for 15inch to 17inch Prodrive Super Turismos plus £100 on excess..

I didn't go for it... insurance is already very high due to 2years no claims and an accident...

When I looks at buying this car the insurance was the same with bigger wheels...
yet I then ring and say okay changing to bigger wheels on the one I bought and they want more...

I can only assume they think it is more nickable... and as soon as you modify it that is the excuse to up the premium... but cheaper to insure an RB5, or P1 than a modified car is stupid...

Privilege increased my premium by £70 for back box, but did it as a <10% performance increase so if i wanted to i could add the induction kit at a later date.

What they didn't tell me was the £100 excess increase!!!!

My premium went up by £250 this year, needless to say i did not stay with them........Quoted the same as Direct Line.................hhhhmmmmmm funny that

Just to add to this, I am with Greenlight as they provided me with an excellent quote last July.

However, I am covered by AXA (who do not like mods), and when I called Greenlight about 3 weeks ago to ask for the difference when modifying with 17" wheels, SS backbox and filter, they almost fell off their chair (as I did) when they found out that the additional premium would be £460 for the remaining four and a half months!

Lucky I hadn't ordered any mods at the time. I think I'll wait and assess the damage to my pocket this July.

Just a warning to those who may want mods in the future to ask for advance notice from their brokers first.

Its all down to financial risk. The insurance companies assume that there is more likelyhood of paying out more money if you change the wheels for the following reasons:

Changing wheels affects the cars handling, therefore more likely to cause the car to crash.

Changing wheels makes a driver think they have a better handling car, therefore more likey to attempt to go round corners faster.

Wheels are more expensive than standard fit, therefore more to pay out if they are wrecked or stolen.

Bigger fancier wheels are more likely to be stolen.

I'm with Axa and went from 16" to 17". No increase on the understanding that they would only replace with standard wheels - perhaps that's an option you could try

Changed style of alloy wheels (not OEM) - supplied and fitted by the dealer - cheaper than the originals.

Insurance company (Dial Direct)refused cover and were going to cancel policy. However, they relented as there was only 3 weeks to renewal, but the wheels would have to go or they would not renew (even with a higher premium).

Anyway kept wheels and insured for less with another company.

I did not have to pay any extra going from 15" to 16" that was with AXA (through Wilsons) they did hold a small carry on until I told them that they were still Subaru OEM wheels.
