they are currrently in a 1997 sti car thats running fine
would this effect the map and make it run lumpy?
my mate is getting a z4 ecu with a chip inside which is mapped to 440cc injectors...someone correct me if im wrong

MY97 or 98 injectors (ie. phase 1.5 car) will fit straight in to MY93-96 car (ie. phase 1).
You do not need an injector adaptor kit. This would be required for Phase 2 injectors MY99/00.
You really need to get the car mapped properly and your only option is ESL or an aftermarket ECU. Swapping ECUs to get the car to run is very hit and miss and could end in tears. Regardless, you will not get the best from your mods without specific mapping.

Yes unfortunately you are possibly right.
On Sunday we remapped a car for "Kev from Blyth".
He had swapped his engine complete with Apexi Power FC into an RA shell. It was exactly the same engine and ECU as we had mapped just a few months ago and there were no other changes whatsoever. A straight swap, exactly the same induction etc. Bob Rawle had to add a considerable amount of fuel in places and we were able to add ignition too and the difference between the car at the start of the mapping session and the end was chalk and cheese.
When the owner got home with the car he sent an email in capitals to express how surprised he was with the difference from the mapping session.
This is a very good example of why swapping ECUs and generic maps are not a good idea and unfortunately if the ignition advance on the Z4 is too much or there are weak areas particularly as the turbo comes on boost then there is every possibility the money saving experience will result in mega expenditure.
