How do I tell if a car is an import or not?
#1
Anyone know please how to prove for definate that a car is a UK model and not a WRX or STi using the engine/chassis no.?
Alanjack just won't have it that my car's not a WRX/STi because we have similarish mods and I've got 50 odd more brake LOL
I need to prove it once and for all!!

Cheers Guys,
The VIN no. does start with JF1 and according to the SIDC FAQ for my model year the WRX/STi model codes are all GC8C, mine is GC8K!
So now he'll HAVE to believe me.
Cheers

I'll have to have a test drive in this car of yours Rich - I'll tell you if its a stormer or not.
Having driven a car with a supposed 346bhp the other week (which allegedly had been RR'd at this) - to be honest it would have been lucky to get 250bhp, it was sooooo slow, compared to mine

Rich,
VIN will prove/disprove it. Jap cars chassis number has less digits on it than UK spec. When all the 'is your grey stolen?' stuff came up this method of checking was mentioned. Think that UK spec has 17 digits and jap less. not in UK at the mo as otherwise I'd check exact number on my VIN
If it's STi then the red manifold will be a dead giveaway as well, unless you'd dropped an STi engine into a UK car.
V5 might be another clue. Mine says 'rigid 2-axle estate' rather than 'impreza turbo' or what ever it should say.
umm, what else. Oh, speedo has 180mph on it, and sticker over the old kph sticker.
leccy folding mirrors, only on imports (but not RA's though, I think!), semi-auto air con on japs, which is NOT on uk cars (apart from 01 onwards).
Rear wash wipe, only on jap cars.
umm, think thats about it.

Cosmetically:-
Jap cars have speedo on left, UK generally on right,
No headlamp washers on Jap cars,
No S U B A R U letters on Jap bootlid,
Jap cars will have remenants of the No. plate hanger on the rear bumper,
Jap will have ally bonnet,
Jap will have ally front whishbones,
Jap dash should show some signs of mod to mph - either a sticker over the old kph, or only read up to 112 mph.
Under previous recorded keepers, V5 should have something like:-
"IMPORTED VEHICLE -
PREVIOUSLY REGISTERED OR
USED OVERSEAS. DECLARED MANUFACTURED xxxx"

Well I'm pretty damn convinced now, BUT Alan still isn't!
1.Mine HAD Subaru lettering on the back when I got it, but I removed it (prefer a smooth bottom )
2.Mine DOES have headlamp washers and NO rear wiper
3.Mine DOESN'T have folding mirrors
4.My speedo is on the RIGHT and has NO evidence of KPH conversion
5.My inlet manifold is silver, not red
6.There is no no. plate hanger on mine
7.Mine has a STEEL bonnet.
Alan, PLEASE say you believe me now!!!!

I thought that at first but it doesn't actually say it anywhere that I can see.
It just says Subaru Impreza Turbo 4WD and the date of registration, I know it doesn't SAY WRX or anything anywhere but it doesn't say UK car anywhere either.
You must be able to tell from the chassis no or something.
Cheers anyway
