are you sure its coming from the top end as its pretty hard to tell with these engines with them laying flat.could be a big end noise.

im pretty sure its not big end,ive had that before, this is a definate high end rattle, its seems to sound like piston slap, rather than the thud thud that i had when big end went on my last one.

it's probably best if you can video it and post a link, that may help diagnose it.

Had the same issue with mine, check the spark plugs they tend to work themselves loose over time!

checked with a stethoscope, its coming from where the head meets the top of the block, makes me think it could be a valve,if one of the stem seals has shifted this could cause it to rattle maybe.

i wouldnt of thought so, they are quite soft and mad of plastic, in theory you could probably run without stem seals, my old alfa 33 (boxer engine) didnt even have any. shim issue maybe, were the valve clearances reset.

the sad fact of the matter is the engine has to come out and be stripped down to know for sure, something i didnt want to go through again,i did it twice with my last one which is still sat outside my house because it decided to overheat for some unknown reason and i couldnt be bothered or afford to rebuild it for a third time.

i would take the rocker cover off first to have a look or feel for something obvious then as you said could be an engine out job, the trials of boxer engines
