Default 08 sti suddenly using oil/ advice needed

I always check the oil on my STi every week and never uses a drop, however this week its gone from max to min in about 200miles!

I haven’t noticed any smoke from the exhaust, no rattles from the engine either, but a small bit of hesitation between 2&3K but not all the time.

Planning to go on holiday with on Friday so hopefully nothing serious, anyone got any suggestions to where all the oils gone?

I would book your car in for an inspection with your local dealer asap

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I don't think you'll be taking the scoob.

The symptoms you describe are the symptoms every other user has described just before a big bang.

Get it booked in for a compression & leakdown test, to identify the issue

Excessive oil consumption
Lack of power between 2,000 3,000 Rpm

are all primary symptoms of the dreaded ringland failure I'm affraid

Mine used 4 ltrs in 127 miles when it failed, which was rather concerning as i was miles away from home with it

would have to agree, a quick check would be to take the oil filler cap off or pull the dipstick when running and you'll see exhaust fumes if ringlands/piston/etc........

I have taken the filler cap of while the engine is running, not noted and fumes or smoke at all. The car is factory standard so hopefully shouldn't have any problems with warranty

Call the dealership first thing on Monday and speak to someone senior there - ideally service manager or the DP explain the problem. They are well aware of this issue.

I would be asking the dealership to collect it due to it loosing so much oil and the likely cause and drop off a courtesy car if i was you, friendly but firm with them.

If you drive it to them and it goes pop then it becomes more of an issue to get sorted with 'blame' etc.

Will be on to the dealer first thing in the morning, reading previous post about this issue I get the impression they either fit a short motor or just change the pistons however there is no mention of a revised part going in so is this likely to happen again in another 12k ? This time it would be out of warranty....

Smoke on startup
Skipping Starter motor like momentary loss of compression
excessive oil consumption
breathing very heavy/but NO smoke coming from the filler cap/dipstick tube
hesistation as the turbo comes on boost
loads of crap all over the rear bumper & excessivly black tailpipes

you'll stir up all sorts of hassle if you mention any bullitins, trust me i know, best just to remain calm with your dealer & explain whats happened and that you do know several people who this has happened to.

You should have Subaru assistance as part of the warranty, I think this lasts for 3 years. get them to collect the car and take it to the dealers. Details are in your handbook package. The dealer may give you a courtesy car, ask them nicely. Also check the warranty documents to see what you are entitled to for a major failure which will take time to repair. The dealer may not automatically offer what you are entitled to!

A quick thought do they change the cats after this work as eating all that oil wont do them any good. Bloody expensive repair bill waiting to happen come MOT time or a couple of years down the line maybe?

Depends on the individual technicians thought on the condition of the cat to be honest with you. usually as a precaution I'd personally change it

A bit off topic but how may cats are there on the hatch STI? I know there are 2 in the exhaust after the turbo (One in the downpipe, the other in the link pipe under the car). Is there one in the up pipe before the turbo?

I would have thought all cats should be changed as a precaution but I doubt they will be to save Subaru money. The owner a couple of years down the line will pick up the cost come MOT time!
